Narrow the topic by adding more information Students choosing Option #1 students must complete a scholarly research paper on a topic that has to with sex crimes or laws regarding sex crimes. The topic must be specific. Submitting a topic like “Rape” is far too broad. Narrow the topic by adding more information such as “Date Rape in American Colleges”, “Drug-induced Rapes”, “Rape Shield Laws”, or “Testimony in Rape Cases”, etc. Be creative. This report is not to include notes from the class PowerPoint or to simply regurgitate information assigned readings. This is independent research that should go above and beyond the scope of the classroom lectures, assigned readings and discussion. YOU MAY NOT RECYCLE PAPERS FROM PREVIOUS HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE CLASSES.
Length, Number and Types of Sources: The term paper will be no less than six (6) complete pages and no more than eight (8) pages long (not including the title or reference page) with at least eight (8) peer-reviewed (scholarly) references listed AND incorporated into the paper via in-text citation. You MAY NOT use books as a reference. While I normally prohibit the use of non-peer reviewed sources (i.e., newspapers, magazines, books, internet websites, etc.) for this class I will allow limited use of these sources as long as they use is very minimal and they are properly referenced. These supplementary sources, such as newspaper articles, MUST be used only in the context of making a point about the contemporary nature of the issue and are not counted among your peer-reviewed sources.
Format/Style: The term paper will be written in the American Psychological Association Style (APA) format. Remember, academic papers should be in a 12-point, easy to read font (Times New Roman preferred) in black ink, and double-spaced. This is an academic paper in which you are researching a subject, not an opinion paper. Please avoid using “I” statements, such as I believe, or I learned, or I think, etc. Also, avoid using contractions (i.e., can’t, doesn’t, don’t, etc.) which are more appropriate for casual and informal writing. Direct quotes should be limited to one per page at the maximum and FOR THIS PAPER, I AM PROHIBITING DIRECT QUOTES OF 40 OR MORE WORDS.
Final Product: The final term paper you will upload to D2L (in one file) will include the following: A properly formatted title page (first page), followed by an abstract (second page), followed by the 6-8 page paper, and a reference page or pages (last pages). The use of headings is suggested and preferred, but not required. Headings help keep the writer on target and organized and to prevent the reader (me) from being exposed to six pages of rambling information.
Report Due Date: The term paper is due on Friday, November 19th and will be uploaded to D2L by midnight.
Grading: The report will be worth 200% (200 points) of your grade. You will be graded on the following:
ü Ability to convey conclusions drawn from the research
ü Quality of the research materials referenced
ü Adherence to the correct APA format
ü Ability to follow directions
ü Proper use of grammar
ü Proper spelling
