Assignment Task
This assignment is an individual assignment. You should aim to use 2,000 words answering the following task:
On 5 September 2023 at 9.30 pm, Gladys Davies, aged 96 years, climbed the stairs of her terraced house in the city, to the first floor, and got ready for bed. She went to bed, turned off the light, and went to sleep.
At 1.00 am on 6 September Derek, aged 32 years, dressed all in black, with boots, a balaclava, and a shoulder bag, jumped over the back wall of the house, walked up to the back of Gladys’s house, and forced the ground floor living room window open with a steel ‘jemmy’. He climbed inside, and began to search methodically through drawers and cupboards for items of value. He was careful not to make a mess. He found nothing of value on the ground floor, so made his way upstairs. He arrived at the landing and moved quietly into Gladys’s bedroom, where he could see her asleep and hear her snoring.
Derek saw a chest of drawers next to the side of the bed where Gladys lay sleeping. He went to it and began opening the drawers and searching inside each one. On opening and searching the third drawer down he found a small box, which, when he opened it and shone a torch at the contents, he saw was filled with small items of jewellery. These items were old rings, necklaces and brooches; they had all been left to Gladys by her mother when she died. Derek placed the box of jewellery into his shoulder bag, allowing the torch beam to shine on the bed as he did so, causing Gladys to wake. As she became aware of the dark form of Derek in front of her, she yelled out in fright. Derek backed away into the bedside table, causing a mug of cold cocoa to tumble to the floor, smashing, and staining the patterned rug which covered the floor. Derek made off out of the bedroom, onto the landing, down the stairs, and into the hallway. He turned the key to the front door to let himself out, and ran off down the street.
Derek ran as hard and far as he could, and then walked home. The next day he took the bus to Max’s house, knocked on the door, and was let in. Max took Derek into the kitchen, and asked him what he had brought for him. Derek took the box of jewellery out and gave it to Max. ‘That’ll do’ said Max. ‘Does that mean that my debt is paid’ asked Derek? ‘Will you leave me alone and stop threatening me?’. ‘Maybe’ said Max.
Derek was arrested two days later. His image had been caught on CCTV at the roundabout near to Gladys’s house. In interview with the police, Derek admitted entering Gladys’s house and stealing the box of jewellery. He claimed that he had been forced into his actions as he owed a drug debt to his supplier, who had been threatening him with serious violence if he did not pay.
In relation to this matter, Derek was charged with burglary of a dwelling, and pleaded guilty at his first appearance before the Magistrates. His case was committed to the Crown Court for sentence, and he is appearing before the court for sentence next week. He has been on bail since charge, and he has no previous convictions.
A victim Personal Statement of Gladys shows that the shock of finding Derek in her house has left her feeling scared and vulnerable in her home, and she is thinking of moving into an old people’s home.
Advise Derek as to the likely sentence that he faces when he appears before the court next week.
ADDENDUM
Having completed the above task, consider the following information:
Police records show that Derek is also known as ‘Cedric’. Under this alias he has two previous convictions for dwelling house burglary. The second of these offences was committed after he had been sentenced for the first; and he was sentenced for the second offence before entering Gladys’s house on 6 September 2023. For the first previous offence of dwelling house burglary, ’Cedric’ (nee Derek) received a prison sentence of 6 months, for the second offence he received a prison sentence of eighteen months.
In no more than 500 words, advise ’Cedric’ (nee Derek) what effect these facts will have, if any, on the sentencing decision.

There will be a penalty of a deduction of 10% of the mark (after internal moderation) for work exceeding the word limit by 10% or more.

Using the jurisdiction that you have chosen in Module 1, discuss in a 2- to 3-page paper how this jurisdiction administers the Miranda rights to detainees. For example, are they read their rights before or after cuffing? What are the wrong ways to administer the Miranda rights? What if someone does not understand the rights? Etc.
If you would like to switch your jurisdiction, you may do so, but please explain why.

The Assignment Template includes this information. Assignments must be completed by using the Assignment Template for each week and uploaded for submission. Rather than a research paper, your final project for this course will instead be the preparation of Crime Prevention / Security Awareness “Infographic”….an infographic visually represents data, facts and teaching points in a way that enages, informs and interests the reader….if you’ve ever seen an information poster with images or numbers (like around campus) or been given a brochure of some type, you’ve seen an infographic !
Attached are a couple of infographics that I did just to demonstrate that even someone who is as technically challenged as I am, can create an infographic. While yours will be more involved because you will be researching a topic and presenting some facts and data to educate plus some info nuggets to inform the readers…more assignment details below.) I didn’t use any data in mine..but I used a template to show how simple it is to cut and paste images and write in text.
I used a couple of different free infographic sites. One is Canva….the link is https://www.canva.com Here’s a quick way to get into the site:
1. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to create one. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THAT YOU SUBSCRIBE TO CANVA PRO…that is a paid service. You can just open a free Canva account. Go through the sign up promps for the FREE program. They will send you a code. Once your in the site…
2. Choose “Templates” on the left side bar
3. Then scroll right and click on “Infographics”
4. Choose a template that might work for your presentation and start filling in your own data and images/graphs, just like you might do with a powerpoint
5. When completed, save to your computer…
A second site that I found pretty easy to use was “PowerPoint Infographics”. This was pretty straight forward and relatively easy to use if you know PP.

Most of the infographics illustrated in the article are much more complex…yours will be super simple like the templates in Canva (link below).
The main point of the exercise is to not get super super fancy on the inforgraphic, but to get some experience presenting a crime prevention / security awareness message in a way that persons will connect with it…rather than them just hittiing “delete” on yet another email reminding us to lock our doors, don’t share your passwords, or watch out for strangers !
For this assignment, assume you are either the security director for a company, hospital, university or other entity…or that you work in the crime prevention unit of a law enforcment agency. You are to kick off a information campaign directed to either employees or the public relating to a crime prevention or security awareness issue. You may want to go back and take a look at the different topics that we covered during the course of this semester for a refresher or ideas, ie: Workplace Violence; Active Shooter; Physical, Personnel, or Cyber Security; Homeland Security, Industrial Security, Security Management, etc…or feel free to come up with your own security awareness item.
You’ll create a modest infographic as described above:
Make sure that:
You choose a good crime prevention issue, security practice, security policy reminder, or other topic suitable for an information campaign
You read about what makes an effective infographic and use those best practices (feel free to get advice from other online sources…there are alot !)
Your Infographic has a title that draws the reader/viewer and then follows with 4 to 6 key points as your infographic sections to inform and tell a story or guide good practices.
At least 2 of those key points informs the reader/viewer using data, charts, graphs or text descriiption of data
Use at least 2 sources in your research…..one may be the textbook; the sources don’t have to be cited in your infographic but do make sure to credit the source of your data in the infographic (not like APA…much simpler like “U.S. Dept of Justice, 2020”)
In addition to the Infographic, you must also submit your Infographic Information Sheet (a blank form is attached) that describes your goals, sources and other items
Attach both the infographic (as a pdf file) to this assignment tab and the Info Sheet (as a Word document).

The purpose of the Assignment is to explore the world of GPS, how it is being integrated into GIS and how this integration is being utilized by law enforcement. With this assignment you will provide some definition and current state of GPS/GIS use in law enforcement. This will set the groundwork for the final part of the assignment which is to propose new approaches for the use of GPS/GIS by law enforcement. This assignment will be 5 pages in length with a title page and references extra. . This will provide you with plenty of time to complete. Part 1: Definition and Scope For the first part of this assignment provide a discussion on GPS and GIS, that first, defines the technologies and second, describes how they are currently being used by law enforcement. The list is quite long, such as tracking patrol cars, providing location while patrolling, having a incarcerated individual where a tracking bracelet. Each of these utilizes the GPS for location and the GIS for providing a visual display of the location. You can use these examples but must add at least an additional 6 or 7 more uses (a total of 8 to 10).Part 2: Future Possibilities This is where this assignment gets interesting. For this second part of the assignment, provide a discussion on a cutting-edge idea or proposal where GPS/GIS technology is being used with law enforcement. This can be a technology being used by another sector like the military but might serve well in law enforcement. Consider Remote Pilot Ariel Systems (RPAS) or drones and how they might work in this fold. Perhaps you have an idea of your own. Here is an opportunity to showcase it and perhaps be the start of your final capstone project for the program. While working through this assignment consider the following:1. Provide definitions for both GPS and GIS and discuss how the two technologies arecomplimentary.2. Provide a discussion on how the GPS/GIS technology is being utilized by law enforcement. You should be able to provide at least 8 to 10 examples. With this, describe the application, how it is used and what its limitations (weaknesses) are. Yes, GPS and GIS have limitations.3.
