It’s a hidden but prevalent problem that individuals in positions of trust frequently perpetuate. Raising awareness, improving support systems, and enforcing severe legal measures are critical to defending older people’s dignity, well-being, and rights, ensuring they live safely and with respect in their later years. Based on the case study, we can figure out the different types of abuse that Gram faces in her everyday life.
Financial abuse
Jack uses Gram’s credit card to purchase golf clubs, beer, and other items for himself, which she does not use or consume. Further, he threatens to stop buying groceries if she complains about the misuse of the credit card.
Emotional/ psychological abuse
Jack yells at Gram, calling her “crazy,” “old,” and “lazy,” which can create emotional anguish, seriously jeopardizing psychological and emotional health. Additionally, Jack threatens to move Gram into a retirement home if she does not allow him continuous use of her credit cards, anguishing her mental health.
Physical Abuse
Jack forcibly pushes Gram aside, causing her to tumble to the ground and suffer minor injuries.
Neglect
Jack intentionally stops to pick up Gram’s crucial medications, such as blood thinner and anti-hypertensive, causing blood pressure to increase unpredictably, disregarding her health requirements, and violating their agreement.
Prevention of Abuse
Gram must protect her finances by cancelling her credit card and arranging for prescribed medication delivery directly to her home. A trusted third party or family member might monitor Jack’s caregiving duties. In this case, the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ONPEA), which is dedicated to raising awareness and preventing elder abuse, should be contacted for a wellness check and to talk about possible treatments. Additionally, the Advocacy Center for the Elderly (ACE), a community-based legal clinic for low-income older adults, can provide legal counsel to set clear boundaries and repercussions for Jack’s activities.
Elder Abuse Prevention in Society

Professionally, I will remain aware of indicators of elder abuse and quickly report any concerns reflecting my personal and cultural biases and developing cultural humility. In addition, I will campaign for legislation that safeguards older people in any way I can in future roles I may hold.

Linear Economy vs Circular Economy
In today’s ever-changing world, economic models play a crucial role in shaping our lives and determining our overall well-being. The ongoing debate surrounding which economic model is more beneficial for individuals, the linear economy or the circular economy, has garnered significant attention. In this essay, we will delve into these two models to explore their respective advantages and impacts on individuals.
The linear economy, characterized by its emphasis on mass production and consumption, offers certain benefits to individuals. One notable advantage is cost-effective products and services. Due to economies of scale, large quantities are produced at lower costs per unit in a linear economy. This enables greater affordability and accessibility for essential goods such as medications or medical treatments that contribute to maintaining overall health. However, it is important to acknowledge that the focus on mass production in the linear economy can sometimes lead to lower product quality. As companies prioritize quantity over durability or craftsmanship, there may be instances where products break or wear out quickly due to lower-quality materials or planned obsolescence. The linear economy generates significant amounts of waste. This unfortunate consequence leads not only to environmental pollution but also to resource depletion. Single-use items often end up in landfills, resulting in frustration over the amount of waste generated and its long-term impact on the environment.
On the other hand, the circular economy presents unique advantages that benefit individuals as well. One key benefit lies in resource efficiency and sustainability. Unlike a linear economy where products are designed for single-use or disposal, a circular economy promotes the reuse, recycling, and regeneration of resources throughout their lifecycle. This not only reduces waste generation but also minimizes environmental impact by conserving valuable resources. Furthermore, within a circular economy model, there is an increased focus on repairability and durability of products. Instead of encouraging planned obsolescence like in the linear model where products are intentionally designed to have shorter lifespans to drive repeat purchases, the circular economy encourages manufacturers to create long-lasting goods that can be repaired easily when necessary. This approach benefits individuals by reducing their need for frequent replacements and saving them money over time. Additionally, embracing a circular economic system opens new job opportunities related to recycling initiatives and repairs. As more emphasis is placed on reusing materials rather than discarding them after one use, industries focused on recycling processes grow. This leads to job creation within these sectors while contributing positively towards economic growth.
In conclusion, the linear economy, while cost-effective, often sacrifices product quality and generates waste. The circular economy promotes resource efficiency, sustainability, repairability, and job creation. By embracing this model, individuals can reduce waste and conserve resources, while reducing the need for frequent replacements.
