This assignment will require you to identify, interview and a coach or athlete with a focus on their sport psychology beliefs and approaches. Assignment Objectives:
– To provide you with the opportunity to discuss the area of sport psychology with a coach and analyze their beliefs related to sport psychology. – To prompt you to link and critically analyze the theory, research, and practice of sport psychology
Assignment Tasks:
1. Identify a coach or athlete at any level (youth sport, high school, collegiate, professional) that is willing to participate in an interview. 2. Interview the coach or athlete about their beliefs about sport psychology and how this is reflected in their coaching.
o Prepare an interview guide for the interview. Key topics to address include:
▪ Demographic information (e.g., sport and level) and coaching background
▪ Beliefs about the importance of psychological factors in athlete performance (e.g., motivation, confidence, anxiety/stress, resilience)
▪ Strategies and approaches used to address psychological factors and improve athlete performance (e.g., goal setting, dealing with pressure)
▪ Any other questions/discussions of personal interest
o Be sure to ask open-ended questions and take notes or audio record the interview
3. Write a report that presents the findings from the survey and interview and links to our existing scientific understanding of sport psychology. The report should be approximately 5pages in length, and include the following:
o Profile of the coach or athlete you interviewed
o Sport psychology-related beliefs and perceptions
▪ Link to findings to existing definitions and theory in sport psychology research
o Insights gained from the coach/athlete
▪ Critically reflect and evaluate the coach/athlete’s perspectives
▪ Discuss what you learned from the assignment
