This essay is for my college applications. ive already written an essay but i dont feel like its strong enough compared to other peoples. you can take ideas from mine, rewrite mine to make it stronger, use mine as an outline, or whatever else you think is best! atleast 250 words, but no more than 650. this is the prompt i was asked to answer: discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization, that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
My experience as a nail tech prepared me for a career in nursing. The similarities between caring for nails and caring for patients isn’t always obvious, but there’s a deep level of care required in both fields that makes all the difference. Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to work in a hospital. I didn’t know what exactly, but I knew the hospital was where I wanted to be. I loved the atmosphere and what the job entailed. At 15, I had some money saved up from summer jobs, family, birthday gifts, and all sorts of little jobs around town, and I wanted to start my own business and make money for myself. I wanted fast money but in something I genuinely enjoyed doing, and that’s where I found doing nails. When I first started doing nails, I was scared that I would fail. What if no one wants to book with me? What if after a while I’m not making enough money and I have to close after all the thousands of dollars I invested into myself to start this career? I’m a huge introvert, even small groups really scare me and my whole job as a nail technician is to talk to people. How would I overcome that and learn how to communicate with my clients? With time the clients came, and bonds formed, even though it was difficult for me to learn how to carry a conversation, and have patience but it all came with time. I learned how to stop being scared of talking to new people because of my job as a nail technician. This skill is essential when talking to families in the hospital. Interacting with my clients helped me develop empathy because it allowed me to hear their stories and understand their needs. This experience translated well into nursing, where I must listen to patients carefully in order to provide them with the best possible care. I often interacted with clients and heard their stories and I realized that nursing had similar customer service aspects to that of being a nail tech, like having to know how to talk to families in their most vulnerable moments. Nail techs work on intricate designs requiring a steady hand and an eye for detail, much like the precision needed in nursing such as administering medication or performing procedures. Nail techs and nurses engage closely with their clients or patients, fostering trust and comfort. Finally, my experience running my business has taught me how to manage my time and resources effectively, which is an important skill in both nursing and life in general. Caring for your clients is very similar to caring for patients in the hospital, just in a different context. The skills I learned dealing with clients will help me become a better nurse in the future. Without becoming an entrepreneur when I did, I wouldn’t be where I am now or know the skills I know that I will use for the rest of my life. Through perseverance and dedication, I beat my fear of failure, and I not only built a successful business but also developed essential skills crucial for nursing.
