You need to write four data analyses for your DS2 assignment. Each piece of analysis is a separate, stand-alone, work. The following provides guidance on the structure.
PARAGRAPH 1: Description of key features (100-125 words).
Begin this paragraph with an overview sentence which summarises the overall idea of the data. Remember not to simply copy the title of the data, but paraphrase. This was covered in week 4.
[Overview sentence] The line graph displays…..
If the overview sentence contains technical words, for example ‘GDP’, then make sure you clarify/define such terms immediately after the overview sentence.
Following the overview sentence and clarification of key terminology, write several sentences describing the key features using the language you have been introduced to in weeks 4 and 5. Also, look at the examples of language from the Academic Phrasebank to help you find suitable phrases to use when describing data, especially trends. Make sure you join your sentences together using appropriate linkers and sequencing language, etc, that you were introduced to in RE2.
[Describing key features] The first key feature identified from the data is…/ It is clear to see from the data that….
PARAGRAPH 2: Explanation of key features (150-200 words).
This is the longest of the three paragraphs and is where you provide an explanation of the key features. However, your explanation cannot be too detailed as you only have a limited number of words.
You need to consider the significance or impact of the key features identified in the previous paragraph. Depending on the data, this could include an explanation of how groups of people may be affected, or society, countries, regions, the environment, etc. For each data sample there is an accompanying text to help you with ideas. See the document entitled ‘Links to Sources for Explanation Paragraph’ under the Assessments and Assessment Guidance tile.
Begin this paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph and links back to the previous paragraph. You have studied topic sentences in RE2.
[Topic sentence(s)] The above key features of data may be explained in a variety of ways. Firstly,…….
OR
The first key feature, identified above, can be explained by……
Again, remember to join your sentences together using appropriate linkers and sequencing language. The lesson materials in week 7 provide further guidance on developing an idea within a paragraph using the PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link). As you will be providing evidence in your explanations, you will need to include in-text citations, which you have been introduced to in RE1 and practiced in RE2.
PARAGRAPH 3: Commenting on the reliability of the data source (50-75 words).
This final paragraph requires you to write two or three sentences commenting on the reliability of the data source. Below each data sample you will find the name of the organisation that the data is derived from.
Week 9 of the course introduces you to issues of reliability, including an approach to assessing the reliability of the data.
REFERENCE LIST
At the end of the assignment, please provide a reference list of the sources used in each of your four analyses. You DO NOT have to provide the reference of the data sample.
