Negotiation Role Play
1. Find someone willing to work with you on this assignment, preferably someone experienced. You will assume the role of the “Cinnamon Buyer”. The other person will assume the other side. They will assume the role of the “Cinnamon Seller”. Ask them to allocate about 1 hour to this exercise.
2. Provide the other person with the case information. Let them prepare themselves for 30 minutes at least. Answer their clarifying questions as you see fit.
3. Agree on a time frame for your negotiation. Most negotiations will not drag forever, therefore, set a maximum length of time for it (my suggestion is 30 minutes), and make sure you and your opponent will stick to it.
4. Engage in the negotiation with the other person. Try to use the strategy and tactics that you have learned skillfully.
Once you completed the role play, complete this assignment, which is a reflection on your negotiation role-play:
– Give some background information on who you negotiated with, the setting, and the outcome.
– In hindsight, elaborate on two major weaknesses (in other words what did not work) and two major strengths (in other words what worked) of your negotiation performance.
