Overview:
The art museum functions as an archive of evidentiary materials, windows upon history, geography, biography, and ethnicity. It is an institution for the staging of historical and aesthetic evolution. While the goal of the 19th-century museum was to improve visitors morally/ to enlighten them, the goal of the 20th-century museum was to present the art for visitors to experience.
For this assignment, you will attend an approved art museum, reflect on your experience, and answer the questions below based upon your museum experience. Take notes and photos (if allowed) as you consider the artworks on the day of your visit. Incorporate what you learned from Carol Duncan’s “The Art Museum as Ritual” essay (your Week 2 reading response) when formulating your responses to the questions.
Submission Criteria:
Content
Your essay submission should respond to all of the following questions in detail:
· Discuss your two favorite pieces of art using terminology learned over the course of the semester. They should be from two different cultural movements or periods. How do these works reflect and contribute to their respective cultural movements or periods?
· Describe the presentation of the museum’s holdings and the layout of the museum. How are the objects grouped? How does the layout/structure of the museum direct your experience and interaction with the objects/cultures displayed and/or suggest underlying hierarchies of the art world?
· Consider the responsibility of the museum to ethically present past and lived cultures. Imagine that you were the Director or a curator for the museum. What changes might you make to the exhibits in order to address ethical and social challenges?
· Carol Duncan’s essay pointed out that Goethe was disturbed by Napoleon’s gathering/display of art treasures in the Louvre as trophies of conquest. The big ethical dilemma – do you feel that all of the art objects displayed in the art museum belong there? Should they instead be displayed in a museum in their country of origin?
