Brain Rules Paper
Brain Rules (Medina, 2014) is a book that presents 12 rules from biological psychology that can help improve a person’s efficiency, success, health, and/or happiness in life. In this assignment, you are expected to write a paper based on content that you have learned from the book. This paper should include, (1) a title, (2) an introduction paragraph, (3a) proposed behavioral changes in your own life for 4 of the rules, (3b) evidence-based support from the book on why these proposed changes should help you, and (4) a conclusion paragraph. Your entire paper should be 5-7 pages in length (not including the title page or references). The paper should be written for a broad audience (not just your professor).
Part 1. Your title page should only include a title, your name, and some other info: see example. The title should adequately and accurately summarize the main idea of your paper. A reader not already familiar with the book and assignment should understand what your paper is about.
Part 2. Your introductory paragraph should provide a preview of what the focus of the paper is and what will be covered in the body of the paper (e.g., you are using Medina’s book to choose specific rules and propose behavior changes that you plan to implement).
*Parts 3a and 3b should be interwoven in the body of the paper
Part 3a. Select 4 of the rules that you want to use to guide changes in your life. You are expected to construct realistic ways to implement changes (i.e., improvements) to your life. Apply each of the 4 rules to your life and clearly explain the specific way(s) that you can change your behaviors to accommodate these changes (according to your current schedule). Some examples include, “I plan to review content for 30 minutes after each class”, or “I’ll set an alarm on my phone for 9:30pm each night to remind me to go to bed”, or “I’ll get a friend to meet me at the gym on Monday afternoons”. When coming up with your proposed behavioral change, try to think of questions such as “how?”, “with whom?”, “when?”, “where”, “how do I keep myself accountable?”, etc. Make sure to present a detailed plan instead of just goals. If you already implement a behavior in your life, then make sure to explain in detail how you do it.
Part 3b. When explaining the behavioral changes, use supporting evidence from the book to communicate why these changes are important. You should largely use research studies and findings from the book (e.g., a 20-minute walk each day has been shown to cut the risk of stroke by 57%); however, an occasional anecdote from the book is also acceptable. Avoid the use of direct quotes. Make sure that some of the information that you refer to in each chapter is clearly biological (e.g., research has shown that exercise can increase blood flow in the dentate gyrus which is important for memory). Specifically, you are expected to explain how the biological findings and research studies that the author refers to support your suggested behavioral change (e.g., “joining and participating in a choir can create a stronger social network, because oxytocin has been shown to be released during group singing”).
*There is a guide on the Blackboard site to help you with scaffolding these sections.
Part 4. The conclusion paragraph should include a reflection on the paper’s content (e.g., why does learning about these brain rules matter?)
Lastly, create a “Reference(s)” page with the book cited in APA style (see the following link for a guide on this). Note: only the 2nd edition is acceptable for this book. If you use direct quotes in your paper, the format should follow: (Author, year, p.XX). It is not necessary to use outside resources; however, if you do, then make sure to include them in your References.
* To conform with APA style, your assignment (including your title page) should be in 12pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, and no additional spacing between paragraphs or headings. Make sure to submit the paper in .docx form (not a PDF).
**Lastly, the chapter on “Gender” is out of date and simplistically presented. Although some info might be useful, you’ll likely benefit more from choosing other chapters.
