4-2 Activity – Historical Narratives Sep 20, 2023 2:58 PM
Good afternoon, Class:
For your second assignment in Week 4, you need to complete the 4-2 Activity on Historical Narratives. Before you complete this assignment, read the directions, download the template and review the rubric here. I created a more detailed template with all the directions from the rubric here.
For this assignment, you will need to find two primary and two SECONDARY sources that support your research. Remember that secondary sources are works that analyze, assess, or interpret a historical event, era, or person, generally utilizing primary sources to do so. Secondary sources often offer a review or a critique. Secondary sources can include books, journal articles, speeches, reviews, research reports, and more. Generally speaking, secondary sources are written well after the events that are being researched.
Make sure the secondary sources you find are SCHOLARLY in nature and utilize the Shapiro Library to find your secondary sources.
For this assignment, you must identify the historical narratives in your secondary and primary sources. In other words, how does your historian “tell the story” of history? The module overview for module 4 has an explanation and examples of narratives in primary and secondary sources. There is also the assigned reading – Two States. Eight Textbooks. Two American Stories. This discusses narrative (the “story” of a particular historical event).
A good example of different perspectives and narratives is Woody Holton’s book “Liberty Is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution. While I do not expect you to read the book, you may want to peruse the book to understand the different ways to tell the “story” of our becoming a nation.
