In the short story Everyday Use, Alice Walker shows us how what we value and the choices we make shape our identity. Based on their perceptions of race, family, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Black Power Movement, the two central characters, Mama and her daughter, Dee (Wangero,) undergo transformations throughout the story.
For this assignment, first watch the video of Alice Walker talking about why she writes and what she hopes to accomplish in her work. (link is attached to this assignment.) Then read the short story Everyday Use. Finally, write a one to two-page response explaining the two characters’ transformations and how these transformations relate back to their different perspectives and help convey the theme of the text. Use evidence from the story as support.
