Searching for scholarly journal articles.
Using the resources that you have been introduce to previously, find one research article and one review article about your insect Order. The goal is to find something interesting about the insect Order. Things of interest could be related to:
where is the insect Order found,
its life cycle,
impact on human health (does it spread diseased),
what does it eats (and does it destroy crops in the process),
do humans eat the insect for food,
how does Wolbachia affect its reproduction. etc.?
This list of questions is endless…remember gross sells. Think about search terms, Boolean logic (e.g., conjunctions), and filters you might use to target your search to get the answers you are looking to find.
Once you identified your two articles (one research and one review), read the abstracts and/or introductions of the articles you selected. You will not understand everything that you read in the articles (that is ok because I am not familiar with everything I read in a scholarly article either), but try your best to get the big picture.
Make citations for your selected scholarly articles
Life science journals DO NOT adhere to a common citation formats, like AMA, APA or MLA. Therefore, authors must consult the “instructions to authors” section provided by each journal to determine the correct citation format required by that journal. In this course we will use the AMA style of citations. Consult this AMA style guide on how to construct proper journal citations for the variety of sources you may encounter when you learn more about your insect Order.
Below are some examples on how to cite journal articles. You must refer to the AMA style guide to determine how to properly cite journal articles that have more than one author.
General AMA Journal Citation Format
Author Last Name, First Initial. Article Title. Journal Title abbreviation. Year; Volume number(issue number): Page numbers.
Print Journal Article example
Rainier S, Thomas D, and Tokarz D. Myofibrillogenesis regulator 1 gene mutations cause paroxysmal dystonic choreoathetosis. Arch Neurol. 2004;61(7):1025-1029.
Online Journal Article example: (Include page numbers if article is also available in print. See below)
Duchin JS. Can preparedness for biological terrorism save us from pertussis? Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 2004;158(2):106-107. http://archpedi.ama assn.org/cgi/content/full/158/2/106. Accessed June 1, 2004.
Use the AMA style guide to assist you as you cite journal articles, websites, books, book chapters, and other sources for your poster.
Record your two citations into the Module 5 Activities Assignment activity. You have finished all of your Module 05 activities so upload your completed Module 5 Activities Assignment into the appropriate Dropbox folder. You must complete and submit this assignment by 10 pm Wednesday 7/6/22.
