Assignment purpose: Effective leaders are able to assess their environments and understand how particular leadership styles affect the organization, emotional climate, and the people working within that environment.
Assignment overview: In this assignment, you will describe the leadership style(s) of a leader with whom you have recently worked.
Steps for completing the assignment:
Describe a recent or existing work, school, or community situation in which you worked with one or more leader(s) (e.g. existing job; group project for a college course; campus organization in which you’re involved; community, faith-based, or political organization in which you’re involved; etc.). Set the stage so that anyone reading the paper has a mental model of what that environment looks like and the people involved. Be sure to identify your role or position. Paint a picture that anyone can “see” or understand (even those who know nothing about formal leadership). In other words, create a mental model for the reader.
Using the Leadership Styles described by Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee in Primal Leadership, describe the primary leader or one of the co-leaders in this situation.
Ascribe one or more leadership style(s) to the leader;
Describe specific leadership behaviors and communication habits that convey the extent to which the selected leader demonstrates the leadership style(s) you attribute to that leader;
Be sure to provide evidence from both the example behaviors/communication as well as the textbook to support your assessment of the leadership style of the individual.
Next, compare your own leadership and communication styles to that of the individual leader on whom you are focusing,
Begin by considering your own EI competency strengths (described in the Emotional Intelligence and Assessment Analysis assignment);
Next, read the “What makes a _____” section of each of the leadership styles (e.g. What makes a visionary; What makes a coach; etc.) and identify the style(s) associated with your competency strengths;
Describe the extent to which those style(s) actually align with the leadership style(s) you employ most frequently and explain how and/or why.
Support your response with specific examples from your own life coupled with information drawn from the textbook.
Conclude by describing any insights you have gained regarding leadership or communication as a result of deeply analyzing a leader’s style(s).
Be sure to watch your use of quotations in your paper–though you will be using ideas from the textbook to support your analysis and synthesis, you need not quote directly, simply restate and identify the page number(s), where appropriate. Direct quotes should be used sparingly to highlight your important points not as “filler” to elongate your paper.
Final steps before submitting the assignment:
Proofread your paper and correct any mechanical errors. If possible, ask someone else to proofread your paper and identify any problems.
Review the assignment rubric. Use the rubric to self-assess your work before submitting. Identify the points your work earned in each of the following components:
Leadership context
Leadership style assessment
Leadership connections to self
Scholarly writing
Include a copy of your self-assessment (i.e. the bulleted list above with the point value you scored each component) at the end of your assignment.
