This course is about the construction of the Orient and the representations of the Other in
Western culture and politics. It also raises questions of strategic reversals of Orientalism, and to
what extent Occidentalism can be considered the non-Western equivalent to Western
constructions of Otherness. The first part focuses on the way Islam is represented in Western
mass media. The second part dissects Edward W. Said’s seminal study Orientalism and its critics.
The third part introduces the class to Said’s ideal about secular humanism, Islamism’s
Orientalism, and explorations of gender and sexuality in the imagination of difference between
‘the West’ and ‘the East’. Drive link to the notes… https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10p9aGhAfzh…
