Introduction. For this course, you are asked to (1) make a video playlist, and (2) write a reflection essay as an introduction to your video playlist. A video playlist is a list of videos that you find from online sources; you do not create new videos. This course project will give you a chance to explore and evaluate online videos such as those on YouTube, and then write a personal reflection on the selected videos. Imagine you are sharing the playlist with project team members working on improvement.
Video playlist should have a short video for each of the three following topics:
Topic 1 – “Touching the heart” (for Module 1). For example:
Patient stories to which you can most relate to
Overview of occurrences of preventable patient harms in a setting or among a patient population
Topic 2 – Illustrating “to err is human” (for Module 2). For example:
Good or bad designs that influence occurrences of human errors
How gaps in communication happen
Topic 3 – Illustrating improvement with human factors concepts or insights (for Module 3). For example:
Tools that support professionals to overcome the limitations in short-term memory
Techniques to overcome communication barriers between professionals
The personal reflection is a 250-300 word essay (to submit in Module 4), as an introduction to your video playlist. Your reflection should contain your view on ways to be an effective champion for patient safety using human factors concepts.
You will be given specific instructions each week to work on a specific part of the course project, and your course project will be graded weekly.
Expectations. For this module, your assignment is to work on Course Project Part 1 – Topic1 “Touching the heart”
Identify 2 videos as possible candidates for the Topic 1: Touching the heart. The main message of your video should motivate audience to be a champion for patient safety. Examples of such videos may be patient stories and overview of occurrences of preventable patient harms in a population or setting that you care the most. Note: do NOT create new videos. You are expected to find existing videos online, and copy the links. As an example, the link to the Luise Batz video shown earlier is https://youtu.be/xrfDxGBEsRk. Ideally your videos are related to your own professional or personal experience, such as
Persons impacted – elderly, children, parents, young & healthy, etc
Types of events – medication, surgery, chemotherapy, rehab, etc
Settings – ambulatory, medsurg, home care, operating room, etc
Write a short (3 sentences) description for each video, underneath the link for each video.
Save the video links and description in a file as you will need these in Module 4 assignment
