This discussion focuses on Margaret Kantz’s Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively, so please read the article in full before joining the discussion. In this article, Kantz discusses how we use other texts to create our own text. To do so, Kantz profiles a student named Shirley, who is learning how to create an original argument on the subject she is researching—much like what you are being asked to do for your Researched Argument essay. Notice the way Kantz analyzes how Shirley moves from reporting information to using her research to support her claim. In this discussion, we will focus on some of the difficulties students might have with understanding how texts work.
You will be assigned into groups for this discussion, where each of your members will be examining a particular difficulty students have as identified by Kantz:
“Many students like Shirley misunderstand sources because they read them as stories” (77)
“Many students expect their sources to tell the truth; hence, they equate persuasive writing in this context with making things up” (77). i am this group
“Many students do not understand that facts are a kind of claim and are often used persuasively in so-called objective writing to create an impression” (78).
“The problems of cognitive overload and inexperience in handling complex writing tasks can create a tremendous hurdle for students because so many of them believe that they should be able to write their paper in a single draft” (86).
