The Cultural Phenomena Paper culminates your learning throughout the semester by applying it to one specific ethnic group.
The basics:
This paper is worth 300 points.
Length is 3 – 5 pages plus title and reference pages; no Abstract is to be included. Papers less than 3 pages generally do not cover the required material adequately but it should be NO MORE than five pages in length.
APA format is preferred INCLUDING TITLE AND REFERENCE PAGES. References must be appropriately cited in the body of the paper and reference page and consistent with style utilized (preferably APA).
It must be typed in academic style with correct grammar and spelling.
First choose a culture that you would like to know more about in relation to health care beliefs and practices. This culture is to be different than your own. Provide a brief introduction concerning the demographics and history of the culture’s first arrival in the United States. Include population numbers when first arrived and now, why they came, when they came, has there been a change in trend of immigration or population numbers, history of culture’s arrival (25 points)
Provide information about the culture related to the six cultural phenomena (Refer to Module 2 for definitions of these six phenomena; however, you must also use other sources for information regarding the 6 phenomena in the culture you are presenting): (150 points)
environmental control: locus of control, traditions, do they plan activities that control nature or direct environmental factors r/t health and illness.
biological variations: nutritional differences, body build and structure, skin color, inherited or environmental susceptibility to specific diseases, social barriers and most common causes of death.
social organization: family type (nuclear, single parent, extended, group) ethnic/religious.
communication: language barriers; use of written, spoken, silence, non-verbal, eye contact.
space: application at intimate, personal, social public spacing with strangers, friends, family, touch.
time orientation: past, present, or future; are they on time for appointments, wear a watch.
Describe any religious beliefs / practices related to health. Include most common religious groups and common practices r/t health, disease prevention (e.g. no blood transfusions for Christian Scientists). (35 points)
