Throughout this section, we have been exploring various ethical principles and theories as they relate to nursing and patient care. This week, we will explore how ethical reasoning may be applied to the undertreatment of pain in patients with a history of drug abuse. You will also have the opportunity to analyze an ethical issue of your own choice based on a patient population you have or would like to work with.
Module Objectives
Utilize evidence-based resources to analyze an ethical issue of one’s choosing.
Define various drug-abuse related terms.
Analyze how to most ethically care for a patient with a history of drug abuse in relation to pain management.
This module contributes to the following course objectives:Examine how ethical issues are identified and resolved within the microsystem.
Engage in ethical reasoning and actions to support the role of patient advocate in a microsystem.
Demonstrate an awareness of patients, as well as, the healthcare professionals’ spiritual beliefs and values, and how those beliefs and values impact health care.
Demonstrate the ability to perform the role of advocate for healthcare consumers.
