The coursework for Design Theory and Criticism requires extensive reading in order to gain access to the depth of ideas that have contributed to the history and framework of graphic and digital design. Helen Armstrong’s Graphic Design Theory: Readings from the Field (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009) is our textbook and touchstone for the course.
This class will offer students the opportunity to read a few dozen important articles, essays and letters about design theory, criticism and philosophy and to engage with those texts in class, with other students in small groups, and on your own. For this assignment, the goal is to give you the time and space to think and write critically about these texts.
Is the author correct or incorrect in their assumptions? What is your argument for or against their conclusions? In this essay, you will learn to analyze important texts about design, find your own critical voice, and build an argument for your own ideas.
