Not everything works out as we had planned. In this assignment, you will reflect upon a situation that didn’t work out despite your best effort, and apply the specific techniques of dissonance reduction to justify your effort.
Read the section on the “Justification of Effort,” pages 88-91 in your text (pages may be slightly different in the electronic version) and write a 1-2 page paper (350 words) answering the following questions:
Think of a time you worked very hard towards something, and you did not succeed. Perhaps you didn’t reach your goal, or if you did, it did not turn out as you had planned. Describe your preparation, anticipation, and actual results.
After you saw that it didn’t work out, what dissonant (conflicting) thoughts did you experience about the effort you put into your goal and the dissatisfaction with the end result? Please include at least 3 pairs of conflicting thoughts. {e.g. “I studied for so long” (effort) is dissonant with, “I failed.” (end result.)}
What did you do to reduce the dissonance? Be specific. (Please use ONLY the techniques described to justify EFFORT. There are 2 specific techniques listed for effort, please include them both.)
Please submit your paper using only Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format (rtf). Your paper should be double spaced, with one inch margins. Please use only Times or Times New Roman 12 point font. In this format, there should be a MINIMUM of 350 words.
Papers will be checked for non-original work using SimCheck.
