Make sure to use the Henry Reeve translation of “Democracy In America”. Democracy in America – Volume 1, Part 2 (Chapters 9- 18) Essay must be between 1700 – 2250 words. Select a topic that is a major theme in that part of the book. You are permitted to draw upon evidence from other parts of the book to enhance your essay (by reading ahead and/or retrieving text from earlier parts), but that is not required to complete each assignment. Students must not write on the same topic on different essays. A subsequent essay on a topic that a student has already treated will not be graded. Students may not submit more than one essay for any given deadline. In sum, students must select three deadlines on which to submit work, and they must submit work on different topics in each essay. Identify the topic of each essay plainly in its title and first sentence. Part I (approximately two-thirds of your essay) With respect to the chosen topic, address at least three of the following questions. Use subheadings to make it clear which of these you are addressing. (Not every part needs to receive equal treatment; for any given topic the space dedicated to each part may vary.) a) Exposition: What is Tocqueville describing in an empirical fashion about the phenomenon, e.g., about the way things are, how they work, or how they came to be? b) Assessment: What is Tocqueville saying in a normative fashion, evaluating the phenomenon under consideration, e.g., about whether it is advantageous, just, noble, natural, or the contrary of these? c) Prediction: What is Tocqueville saying to people in his own time about whether they should expect that phenomenon to remain stable or constant, or if they should expect things to change in the future regarding it? If it is likely to change, is it apt to change for the better or for the worse? d) Prescription: Does Tocqueville have any recommendations about what can and should be done so that things might turn out better rather than worse in the future, from his point of view? Note that with respect to any of these—and (c) and (d) especially—your discussion may well involve connections to other topics regarding which Tocqueville observes relevant relationships of cause and effect. Part II (approximately one-third of your essay) With respect to the chosen topic, address at least one of the following questions, continuing to use subheadings and proper references to the text. e) Criticism: Since Tocqueville’s time, have things gone the way he expected or recommended? f) Analysis: How does Tocqueville help us to criticize or understand the world today? And/or what does the world today tell us about how to criticize or understand Tocqueville? Include a word count at the end of your essay. The assigned word length does not include footnotes/bibliography. This is not intended to be a research paper and it is possible to compete the assignment using only the assigned text. If you make references to current events or cultural artifacts to draw comparisons, supplement your argument, or illustrate your points, it is good to provide some source(s) rather than relying on memory alone. Chicago style citations are preferred, although any standard scholarly format is acceptable so long as you are consistent and page numbers are specified wherever available. Tocqueville’s text may be cited parenthetically; e.g., by specifying (Volume.Book.Chapter). Provide full and proper citations for all pertinent sources that you have consulted even if you don’t reference them directly. Don’t pretend something is a quotation when it’s not; don’t pretend something isn’t a quotation when it is. Provide citations even when you are only paraphrasing—not only as a matter of intellectual honesty, but also to better impress your reader.
