This Method Application Exercise invites you to apply pentadic criticism (as outlined in Foss, Ch. 11 & discussed in lecture). Remember that pentadic criticism asks you to analyze how a situation is being constructed by a message/artifact in order to reveal how/where responsibility/blame/praise for the situation is being placed, which is used to provide insight into a rhetor’s underlying motives/worldview/ideology (why would [this person] construct [this situation] in this way?). Pentadic criticism is particularly useful for analyzing the rhetoric surrounding situations that have been constructed/described in contrasting ways by people representing different ideological/political commitments.
This artifact is from the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit and features then-16-year-old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg addressing world leaders on the topic of climate change and human-caused environmental degradation. First, watch the artifact in full at least once. Then, review the prompt and questions at the end of this post and watch the artifact in full at least once more, taking notes to help prepare you to respond. Finally, create your own thread with your response to the prompt and questions. (Hint: the Agent is not Greta, the Act is not Greta giving a speech, the Scene is not the U.N. Climate Action Summit, the Purpose is not to raise awareness about global climate change, and the Agency is not Greta’s global platform.) Review the three pentadic pitfalls from lecture to ensure you are interpreting the pentadic elements correctly.

Instructions for your thread
1. First, provide a vivid overview of this video. Use precise and illustrative language to describe what you see/hear in this video. Aim for a concise but detailed description—you shouldn’t include every detail, but you should include enough detail to enable someone who hasn’t watched this video to understand its content and style based on your overview.
Then, respond to each of the following questions/prompts. Use elements from your overview to provide evidence (direct quotes or vivid descriptions) from the speech to support your interpretations and explanations/reasoning in your own words to unpack the meaning and significance of the relationship between your evidence and interpretations. Pentadic criticism can be tricky, so remember to focus on how Thunberg is constructing/describing the situation of climate change, not on the surface-level delivery of this speech (so Thunberg is not the agent, the act is not her giving a speech, the scene is not the U.N. Climate Action Summit, etc. Instead, focus on what Thunberg is saying is happening, who she is saying is responsible, what scene she is describing, etc.).
2. Apply the pentad to Thunberg’s speech—how does she construct the act, agent, scene, purpose, and agency? Clearly label each element and analyze how Thunberg uses rhetoric, such as terministic screens, to construct her argument.
3. Practice putting the pentadic elements into ratio pairings to examine how Thunberg’s construction of each element of this problem influences her discussion of other elements (e.g. how does the way Thunberg constructs the act influence how she talks about agent, scene, agency, and purpose?) You should consider all possible ratio pairings, but you only need to discuss the 2–3 ratio pairings that you think are most significant to how the problem of climate change is being framed overall. Based on this process, on which pentadic element does Thunberg place primary blame/responsibility for the problem of climate change?
4. In 1–3 concise sentence(s), describe how Thunberg frames the problem of climate change—what argument is she ultimately making? Then, discuss why you think Thunberg framed the problem in this way—what does this framing suggest about Thunberg’s underlying worldview, and what does this framing attempt to persuade world leaders and members of the public to do?
Your post should be at least 1,200 words (total) and should be as long as necessary to fully address each question. Think of your responses as the analysis section of an essay and edit for clarity and coherence accordingly. *Please include questions in your response*
