In this analysis paper, you will watch one of the following movies – MOONLIGHT (Netflix or Amazon Prime), LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (Amazon Prime or YouTube), THE DARK KNIGHT (Netflix or HBO Max) – and analyze it from an editing standpoint.
You will choose 4 sections of the film (for example: the opening, the climax, a scene with heavy conflict, a chase scene, the ending, the introduction of the main character, etc) and write in complete sentences and paragraphs analyzing the edit. I will provide prompts to initiate your analysis, but you should branch out from there. Do not just read the prompts and write a short answer. You will supplement your analysis with screenshots from the film. Do not use opening or ending credits.
The paper should be 8-10 pages written in complete sentences with complete paragraphs in 12 pt font, Times New Roman, double spaced.
First, watch the film in its entirety. Then answer this question.
Address your personal experience after watching the film. Write about any previous knowledge, pre-conditions or experience with the film. Write about the conditions where you viewed it. Write about what you liked and didn’t like and why. Support your opinions with examples.
Next take screenshots of the sections that you are going to write about.
The prompts for EACH of the 4 SECTIONS that you analyze are:
Identify where in the movie you are discussing with a written description and a screenshot(s).
What type of cuts/transitions are used in the section? For example: jumpcut, insert, reaction, hard cut, flashback, cutaway, montage, motion, dissolve, color fade, color change, etc. What was the purpose and effectiveness in communicating their intended message with the types of cuts used? Give specific examples.
What is the subtext of the edited scene? https://screenwritingmagazine.com/2018/04/03/top-10-examples-killer-subtext-movies/
How do the edits visually communicate the subtext? Give examples where needed.
What is the audio space in the scene and how does it integrate/contrast/augment the edit and viewing experience?
Think about SFX, music, ambiance, volume changes, etc. Give examples where needed.
What type of visual effects (motion, animation, compositing-layering, color, etc) were used? What did they do to help drive the narrative?
Give examples where needed. If there were no visual effects, skip this question.
What is another way to handle this section through the edit? Why would you choose
to do that? How does it relay a different visual and narrative message?
Answer this question last after you have written about the four sections.
Explain how you feel about the film after you finished this project. Compare and contrast your initial experience from the critique that you just did.
What did you learn? How might you look at films differently in the future?
