The essay should have about 2000 words (with a leeway of approximately 10% more or less). Your essay should be illustrated; each illustration should have a caption that includes the source.
Essay topic: Architecture and Energy
Pick a building that is related to any of the themes covered in the lectures.  The building I picked is: “St Paul’s Cathedral”
Make an argument how the form and/or use of the building is related to energy availability. Support your argument with scholarly texts and, if possible, with comparisons to other buildings/contexts.
Your essay should consist of the following sections:
1. Introduction (ca. 200 words)
A 1-2-paragraph introduction into your building, based on the “journalist’s questions” (What kind of building? Where is it situated? When was it built? Who lives there? etc.), and a statement of your hypothesis: how is this building related to energy availability?
2. Main body (ca. 1600 words)
Explain your argument. Your argument should be based on a precise description, using scholarly/professional language. Conclusions should be drawn from
– your observation of the building or of other buildings (can be from pictures)
– texts, facts and numbers from scholarly books and articles and occasionally from reliable internet sources
Your argument should take into account one or more of the following aspects:
– formal/technical aspects (how was it built and why?)
– urban aspects (what are the characteristics of the neighbourhood/ surroundings?)
– social/economic aspects (who uses the building, how and why?)
Ideas taken from texts have to be referenced with a footnote.
Personal observations or encyclopaedic information (construction dates, names, etc.) do not have to be referenced.
4. Conclusion (ca. 200 words)
Summarize your argument
Apart from the general assessment criteria (mentioned in the core information) your essay will be assessed on
– your ability to make a convincing argument
– how well your argument relates to your description
– the appropriateness of your sources
