For this assignment, you will write two paragraphs, a counterargument and a refutation, which you will be able to use in the draft of Essay #2.
Before you start this task, be sure you have reviewed all of the handouts in the Lesson on Counterarguments and Refutations and taken a very close look at the sample paragraphs provided there; those are very good models for you to follow.
In order to assess the effectiveness of your conterargument and refutation, I need a reminder of the stance you are taking on your debate issue. So, here are the specific requirement and steps to follow for this writing assignment:
First, at the top of the page, provide your thesis statement.
Next, provide a counterargument paragraph. This should incorporate information from at least one source and give a very clear and detailed explanation of a naysayer or opposing viewpoint. Be sure you give the opposing view a full, complete, and fair representation.
Lastly, provide your refutation paragraph. This should specifically address and respond to the points raised in the counterargument paragraph and explain how and why that viewpoint is wrong. This is how you will support your thesis. If you have a source to incorporate for further support, that is fine, but it is not required.
In the end you will have TWO paragraphs: a counterargument that reflects an opposing view and uses ideas from a source and a refutation paragraph reflecting your own ideas about why that viewpoint in misguided or incorrect.
