For this assignment, you will be writing a review and analysis of 3 sources relating to the topic of whether or not college athletes should be allowed to be paid. You do not need to decide what YOU think about the topic, but, rather, you need to understand and analyze the general “conversation” others are having about the topic.
FIRST: Review the 2 sources you located for your annotated bibliography assignment.
SECOND: Choose a 3rd source from the files below (I am providing 3 options, but you only need to choose one of them to add to your list of sources. After you choose one of these, you should have 3 sources on the topic.)
–Paying students to play would ruin college sports Download Paying students to play would ruin college sports(Newspaper Article – The New York Times, February 25, 2019)
–Playing Fair? Download Playing Fair?(Magazine Article – Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, September 16, 2021, Volume 38, Issue 11, Pages 18-20)
–Taking on the NCAA Download Taking on the NCAA(Magazine Article – Sports Illustrated, February 2021, Volume 132, Issue 1, Pages 10-13)
THIRD: Write your literature review and analysis of the sources. Specific requirements are listed below.
INTRODUCTION: Introduce the topic and briefly introduce your 3 sources. Your introduction should include a thesis statement.
THESIS: The thesis statement will not be argumentative, but it should succinctly state the tension in the topic and also indicate the direction the conversation seems to be going in, based on the 3 sources you are using.
BACKGROUND/CONTEXT PARAGRAPH: Provide an overview of the problem of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Cite any sources you use to explain the context of the issue using APA formatting (refer to your APA Citations Cheat Sheet Download APA Citations Cheat Sheet.)
ANALYSIS PARAGRAPHS FOR EACH SOURCE: What do the sources you chose say about this topic? One source at a time – succinctly and accurately summarize the position of the article and provide a rhetorical analysis that considers relevant items such as author, publisher, intended audience, timeliness, purpose, bias, ethos/pathos/logos…. You should include 1-2 full paragraphs for each source, and you must cite the source in your text using APA formatting. You may quote, but only to show examples of how the language influences your analysis of the source – quotes should be short and must be cited properly. You may use information you previously used in your annotated bibliography for this portion of the essay.
REFLECTION PARAGRAPH: You have now read and analyzed 3 sources on this topic. In this paragraph, consider what additional information you would need to research in order to fully understand the different aspects of this topic if you were going to write a well-informed persuasive essay stating your own opinion. What do you know that you don’t know enough about or need to consider further? It is okay to use first person in this paragraph.
CONCLUSION: Based on your analysis of the 3 sources you chose, which source made the best argument (even if you don’t agree with the source)? What made that argument the strongest of the 3? Move from this value statement on which source was the most compelling to finish the paragraph by revisiting of your thesis and commenting on how the conversation around the topic is still ongoing.
REFERENCES PAGE: Add your references page after the conclusion. The references should start at the top of a new page and should have the word “References” listed at the top, center of the page. Below this, add in the references for the 3 sources you used in your paper. The references should appear in APA formatting (refer to your APA References Cheat Sheet Download APA References Cheat Sheet.) Remember to alphabetize, double space, and use the hanging indent.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: The paper needs a title relating to the topic. The text must be double spaced and in Times New Roman 12 pt. Review your paper for clarity, grammar, punctuation, etc. before submitting. The paper should be 7-10 paragraphs long, followed by the references page.
