Spoiler alert: Whitehead’s novel has 12 chapters, each named for a place or person that figures in the book.
In the final pages of Chapter 12, the protagonist, Cora, emerges from the underground railroad tracks and starts walking. She encounters a wagon train, heading West. She accepts a ride with an old black man who calls himself Ollie. He says the wagons are headed towards California.
Discussion Questions:
Think back on Campbell’s ideas about heroism. Then recall all the events that have occurred in Cora’s journey prior to Chapter 12. In your judgement, is Cora’s journey successful?
What is one piece of evidence can you use about Cora’s story to support your argument? You might think of her previous accomplishments or qualities that she has displayed. You could also refer to Campbell’s stages and elements in the hero’s journey.
