Hello,
I have enjoyed your post. Through Henrietta’s Lack’s reluctance she finally agreed to get checked and found out that she had cervical cancer. I understand that her cells needed to be extracted to examine to create the correct regimen to remove the cancer cells. However, the doctors should have explained the procedure to her and ad her formed consent. If she did not understand the procedure, the doctors or healthcare team should have talked to her in layman’s term. I do agree with you, “Her cells contributed majorly to discoveries in bio-medical research. “The studies on her cells have impacted on how cancer can be removed.
The Nuremberg Code is a code that recognizes to avoid actions that injure patients. According to Allen- Kinross (2021), “The Nuremberg Code is a set of ethical research principles, developed in the wake of Nazi atrocities—specifically the inhumane and often fatal experimentation on human subjects without consent—during World War Two.” This code was incorporated to help safeguard the patients against medical experiments and medical procedures.
Medical ethics have revolved throughout the decades. According to “Bridging the gap between theory and practice: the BMA approach to medical ethics”, “The discipline of modern medical ethics is rather different. It involves adherence to similar values, but they often need some interpretation. It does not attempt to provide ready-made answers but requires analysis and reasoning. It requires critical reflection about ‘norms or values, good or bad, right or wrong, and what ought or ought not to be done in the context of medical practice. The object of medicine continues to be the provision of net health benefit with minimal harm, but modern ethical thinking insists that this must also be done in ways that respect patients’ autonomy and that are just and fair. that this must also be done in ways that respect patients’ autonomy and that are just and that this and contentious. It involves a search for morally acceptable and reasoned answers in that this and contentious. It involves a search for morally acceptable and reasoned answers in critical scrutiny of the issues and careful consideration of various options. It is often as concerned with the process through which a decision is reached as with the decision itself.”
