There is no maximum length; however, if you find you have written more than 1500 words, you should see whether you are writing off topic. Edit out any excess verbiage. You should include some direct quotations from the literary works you are discussing. These must be followed by a reference that tells where the quotation came from. If the quotation is from a story, the reference is a page number; if it is from a poem, the reference is a line or lines. For this reason, y‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ou must use a printed book that includes the stories or poems you are discussing. In most cases, this will be the anthology assigned in the course. Some students may be finding assigned literary works online; that is fine for reading the course material. However, quoting in your essay from a literary work you found online will not work because you need to provide real page numbers and a full bibliographical identification. You must include a separate page at the end entitled “works cited”, which lists the literary works you are discussing along with the exact printed location.
