Worship Service Report
Students will attend three (3) worship services and write a reflection on the experiences of their corporate worship. One worship service must be from a different denomination and worship style than your own. For example, if you attend a High-Church Anglican service, attend a contemporary service or a charismatic service. If you attend a non-denominational or Baptist(ic) contemporary service, attend a mass at a Catholic parish or a holy liturgy at an Orthodox church. One worship service must be from a culture different than your own. Culture is based on common language, backgrounds, and experiences. If you normally attend an English- speaking church, find a church started by people who have migrated to your area from a different county and who may sing and worship in another language. One worship service can be from your home church; however, it would be preferred for you to attend an additional service outside your denomination.
In this project, students should theologically analyze the worship service to determine the theological reasons/purpose behind the actions, statements, symbols and songs that are communicated in each worship service.
Schedule your visits to these worship services to ensure you have sufficient time to attend the services, compare the services, and reflect. The text should be 12-point font, double-spaced.
Your Worship Service Report should include the following four (4 sections):
Worship Service History (1 page): Describe your current and past worship service history. Describe previous service style or denominational history. Describe the type of church (denomination, congregation size, etc) and your weekly participation experiences. Describe the number and types of services where you currently attend as well as the quality of the worship experience in each of these services. (10 points)
Current Worship Practices (1 page): Describe what you do to prepare for worship (if anything) or what you aspire to do in the future if you currently do nothing. Identify what you think is the focal point of the worship service (sermon, songs, Lord’s Supper, etc) and explain how the activities of the worship service lead up to it or respond to it. What part(s) of corporate worship do you find the most personally beneficial? What part(s) of corporate worship do you find least beneficial? Explain why. (15 points)
Three (3) Worship Service Reports (2-3 pages each): For each worship service, record the church information (name of church, pastor/priest name), attendance date and time, order of worship, elements of worship, and take sermon or homily notes. Identify what the focal point of the service was (sermon, Lord’s Supper, puppet ministry, etc) and explain why you believe this was the focal point. What led up to the focal point? What was the response to the focal point? Did the song choices relate to sermon message? What role did Scripture play in the service? Was the Lord’s Supper open to guests if it was given? How do you know? Describe how prayer was used. Describe how the offering was incorporated in the service. Was the offering a natural element of the worship service or an after thought? Was there an “alter call” or time for people who desire to express their faith in Christ to make a public profession of faith? How did this element play into the worship service? Evaluate if the service was intended for Christians to worship, to reach non-Christians, or both. (50 points)
