As we have been discussing in our course so far, families are often shaped and affected by changes in other social institutions, especially the economy and government. These social institutions profoundly affect individuals’ rights and opportunities. In particular, laws, policies, and social structures at various levels (e.g., local, state, national, international), play a significant role in individuals’ future life chances.
This week, we will be examining the impacts of some particular laws and public policies that affect families. Understanding these laws and policies, and their impacts, can make it possible to imagine how they can be changed to benefit families.
In what ways can government policies be used to support families? Identify 5 specific policies from this week’s Learning Resources that could be enacted to support family life at any particular level (local, state, national, international). Briefly explain why you think that each policy would be important and what its impact could be.
