Assignment Content
Sociologists conduct research to collect information about society and they apply their findings to better understand the human condition. Sociologists can investigate people in their natural environments by becoming part of their everyday settings to observe and study participants.
In this assignment, you will observe groups of people in social settings to better understand social patterns and group dynamics and then you will write about your findings.
Complete Parts 1 and 2 below.
Part 1: Social Group Observation
Imagine you are a sociologist who is researching the behavior of social groups in social settings.
Conduct an in-person observation in a setting where a group of people gather. Examples of places with groups include malls, grocery stores, libraries, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, schools, employee break rooms, parking lots, pubs, sporting events, or your local neighborhood.
Station yourself in a safe location where you can observe people for 30–60 minutes without having to approach or engage them. You will just observe people, not interact with them.
Use the Social Group Observation Template to collect field notes on the following data about the individuals in your observation, as you perceive it:
Gender/sex
Race/ethnicity
Age
Note: Your numbers do not need to be exact but try to make them as accurate as possible. You do not need to submit your field notes with your assignment—they are for you to reference as a guide during your observation.
Part 2: Findings
Write a 350- to 525-word explanation of your observation findings. Do the following information in your discussion:
Describe the setting for your observation, including the location, time of day (morning, afternoon, evening), and the weather, if relevant.
Describe the patterns of group behavior you observed that may have been influenced by each of the following factors:
Setting
Gender/sex
Race/ethnicity
Age
Describe any cultural norms you may have observed in the social groups.
Explain any social or economic factors that may have influenced the dynamics of the social groups.
Explain how observing social patterns and group dynamics may help you succeed in culturally diverse environments.
Submit your written findings for this assignment.

“Sociological reasoning is often referred to as the sociological imagination—the ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and the larger society (Mills, 1959b). The sociological imagination is important to each of us because having this awareness enables us to understand the link between our personal experiences and the social contexts in which they occur. Think for a minute about some of the problems you face. Are these problems totally individualistic in nature or do they have their roots in the larger society? What about the high cost of college and university education? At a personal level, you and your family are the ones who have to figure out how to meet these economic demands and sometimes financial hardships caused by the cost of your education. However, what you must pay to attend college and how the costs of your overall education are funded (through savings, part-time jobs, family contributions, grants, scholarships, or other economic means) are embedded in the larger structures of higher education and the politics and economics of our larger society.
The sociological imagination will enable you to grasp the relationship between economic and social arrangements, such as the cost of higher education, at the societal level and your own biography at the individual level. This way of looking at social life also helps you distinguish between personal troubles and social (or public) issues. Personal troubles are private problems that affect individuals and the networks of people with whom they regularly associate. As a result, individuals within their immediate social settings must solve those problems. For example, one person being unable to afford a college education or being unemployed may be viewed by some other people as a personal trouble. But, by contrast, public issues are problems that affect large numbers of people and often require solutions at the societal level. To pay for a college education, many students must rely on loans that may follow them many years after college. Some estimates suggest that more than 44 million people in the United States have a combined total of more than $1.4 trillion in student debt. This is a societal problem, not just an individual one!
The sociological imagination helps us place seemingly personal troubles, such as having difficulty paying for a college education, losing one’s job, or thinking about taking one’s own life (referred to as “suicidal ideation”), into a larger social context, where we can distinguish whether and how personal troubles may be related to public issues. Let’s compare the two perspectives by looking at suicide.”(Kendal, 2021)

The book talked about subcultures and countercultures. And in this Unit, we are talking about deviance (and some sociologists call countercultures “deviant subcultures”). Find an example of a counterculture that is not listed in your book. Don’t just google “counterculture” because then you will all have the same example and it will be really obvious that you took the easy way out (yeah… this isn’t my first rodeo… please try to be creative, independent thinkers).
After you identify and summarize a little bit about your example of a counterculture, explain why it is a counterculture. This requires that you really think about what makes this subculture deviant? Then explain which sociological perspective (i.e. functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism) is most useful in examining that counterculture and why? Be sure to explain the strengths and weaknesses of your applied sociological perspective. Students tend to ignore this last part of the question… but it is arguably the most important part! For example, if you say that Functionalism helps provide insight into your counterculture, you need to say why… and then you need to explain how it falls short.
Something to keep in mind: individual deviance is different from collective deviance. This is important for you to consider when you are thinking critically about what constitutes a counterculture.

The theme of the paper is “Algorithms and Society”.
This paper is a research paper that talks about a recent issue. The title is the issue I had picked. I have uploaded my existing paper. The document “Implementation of AI on Canadian Immigration”. The document called ‘feedback’ has the feedback from instructors. Please see the doc called paper workshop. It clearly mentions the formatting of the paper. The only thing different about this paper from a regular one is that there has to be at least 3 figures used inside the paper and interpreted in words to support your writing. One of the figures has to be a news headline that introduces or sets example of the issue. I have put that in there, but you are free to change it. The other figures can be either table or graph showing some sort of statistic or a social media post, like from reddit, that shows a discussion of the issue. The format is:
Personal Narrative
Introduction to the issue with a clear thesis and stance. (must be 1 page long)
Argument 1
Argument 2
Counter Argument
Rebuttal
Recommendations (must match stance)
Please do not make any claims that is not cited like I had done on my draft. There must be in text citations. IF possible, one quote is to be used. Please do not cite a whole page from the source and deem it as a summary. Summarise/paraphrase a specific paragraph and cite the page number and paragraph number in the reference page so I can find the cited source and correct any problem later. Please let me know if there is any other confusion.

Draft and Final Paper Guidelines You will be required to submit both a draft and final copy of the paper. The draft copy of the paper should be as close to the final product as possible so that you can receive as much feedback as possible for the final version. Draft papers will be graded on content as well as on the amount of effort to put into making it as close to the final product. Changes to your paper will be evaluated in the final paper to ensure that you incorporated the suggested changes provided by the instructor. Both the draft and final paper should include the sections below. Students who do not cover each section in the draft paper and final paper will automatically receive a 5-point deduction for each missing section. Introduction This section should provide the reader with an overview of your paper. You will need to outline the purpose of the paper, an overview of the chosen crime, and a limited discussion of the theory you have chosen. This section should be ½ to 1 page in length. Definition and description of crime You should choose a type of crime in which you are interested, such as homicide, drug dealing, terrorism, etc. It is fine if you are more interested in discussing categories of crime, such as property or violent crimes in general, but be sure that you narrow the topic somewhat. Once you have decided on the scope of crimes that you want to explain, you should define and describe the criminal behavior. You may want to include a legal definition of the crime, but more importantly, you need to discuss the behavioral patterns of the crime. For example, a discussion about homicide would include describing the types of homicides and who is more likely to commit a homicide, and who is more likely to be a victim of homicide. You may also include a brief discussion of whether the chosen crime has increased, decreased, and remained the same over a specified period. For crime rate information you are required to only use official sources of data (FBI, Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Incident-Based Reporting System, Uniform Crime Report, etc.). When in doubt about an official source, please email me. This section should be 1 to 2 pages in length. Theoretical Analysis To explain the criminal behavior that you chose, you must rely on a criminological theory covered in the course and readings. With your discussion, you will first describe the basic components of the theory. This includes any concepts and terms associated with the theory. Second, you will describe how the theory can be applied to explain the chosen crime. You will need to use the chosen theory to explain why people who commit the crime you have chosen. Third, you will discuss the strength and weaknesses of the theory in explaining the crime. In this section, you should be able to respond to the following: (1) how does the theory explain the crime you are writing about and (2) what aspects of this crime cannot be explained by their theory. Students are expected to search online databases to locate at least five (5) peer-reviewed journal articles to support their argument of how the chosen theory explain the chosen crime. Wikipedia is not an appropriate source. Journals such as Social Forces, American Sociological Review, Criminology Deviant Behavior, and the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency. When searching for related articles, I recommend using google scholar as a starting point. In google scholar you can use key words to search for relevant articles and can find sources from various disciplines. Auburn University has subscriptions to academic journals, so you should never have to pay to access an article. If you have tried multiple outlets and are being prompted to pay to access an article please email me for assistance. This section should be 3 to 5 pages in length. Policy Recommendations In this section, you will discuss policy recommendations or strategies that are related to the criminological theory you have chosen. In other words, according to the theory, how do we reduce the chosen crime? It is suggested that you discuss at least two (2) policies or strategies. Consider who will be the target population? What resources (personnel and material) will be required to effectively integrate your prevention strategy? Basically, describe how your theory would put an end to or reduce crime if its theorists were put in charge in the criminal justice system. This section should be 2 to 3 pages in length. Conclusion The purpose of the conclusion to provide closure for the paper and should include a synthesis of the key points of the paper. Briefly outline the basic assumption of the theory and restate the most important ideas of the paper. This section should be ½ to 1 page in length. Additional Assignment Guidelines 1 Your paper should include a cover page listing the title of the assignment, your name, and the name of the class. 2 Carefully proofread your paper for grammatical errors, clarity, and coherence. Make sure your arguments flow logically and that your essay is well-structured. Please address all feedback from the draft in the final paper. 3 You should include a reference page containing scientific sources that you used in your paper. When you cite a work within the text, you need to include the author’s name and the year of publication in a parenthetical cite behind the paraphrased statement. If quoting directly, use quotation marks around the text. Do not cite or use any sources if you did not actually read (or skim) the material. If you want to repeat a quote that was taken from another source, the proper citation format is as follows (for a quote): “Antisocial behavior tends to remain stable over time; it is the mother of all that is evil” (Maahs & Pratt, 1989, p. 205; cited in Cullen & Agnew, 2003). Or paraphrasing: Maahs and Pratt (1989; cited in Cullen & Agnew, 2003). 4 Your paper should be typed and double-spaced and should have one-inch margins on the top, bottom, and both sides. You should also use a font of 12. The text of your paper must be a minimum of seven (7) pages long and a maximum of twelve (12) pages long for you to do an adequate job on the paper. The required page length does include the title and reference pages. Five points per page will be deducted for final papers under the minimum page length or above the maximum page length. Submit assignments through Canvas. 5 Use the American Psychological Association (APA) publication guidelines for parenthetical citation guidelines and reference page guidelines. Assignments should be spell-checked and use proper grammar. These things will count towards the grade you receive on the paper. 6 You must CITE all information taken from other authors’ works. Failure to do so is plagiarism. If you fail to cite properly and appropriately, you will be penalized. The penalty will range from point deductions (for small or unintentional infractions) to a zero (for copying complete sentences without any citations). Changing one or two words of an author’s work is not sufficient. If you are in doubt of whether you should cite or whether you should use quotes…USE DIRECT QUOTES. However, this does not give the license to use only direct quotes. Relying on too many direct quotes does not display your understanding of the material.
