“ChatGPT v Me”: Article Summary and Critical Response
With the recent advent of ChatGPT and other AI text generators, academia is faced with a dilemma: do we resist or adapt? In this assignment, we choose to adapt. By choosing to adapt, this assignment raises awareness of the importance of knowing and using technology for ethical purposes in academia and will better prepare students to the challenges they will face in a world evermore reliant on AI.
Outside of interacting with and critiquing ChatGPT, students will also summarize, accurately paraphrase, and critically respond to academic author(s). Summary is a concise presentation of the main points or ideas of a text. Paraphrasing is presenting the words and ideas of others “in your own words,” particularly in a succinct way. Critical response is a succinct reaction to an article that includes your own perspective, analysis, or critique of the argument forwarded by the author(s).
Students will select an academic, peer-reviewed article and do all three of the above, without plagiarizing.
Student will then ask ChatGPT to “critically respond to” that same article. They will then critique ChatGPT’s output by comparison.
35% of the final grade.
The “ChatGPT v Me” assignment should be 1,000 words (max)
There are six components to completing this assignment:
1. Finding an article:
Students will search, choose, and retrieve one peer-reviewed. The article must be published within the last decade and the subject matter must relate to course material (i.e., general topic is on/about a main institution). Ensure the article has an abstract, introduction, methodology section, and a discussion and/or conclusion.
2. Reading (and rereading) the article:
You should identify the following components:
The research question and/or purpose of the study (usually in the introduction)
The hypothesis/hypotheses or expectations (may be in the introduction, literature review, or methods section)
What data and method/approach were used to carry out the study (often in data/methods)
The results (usually in the findings)
The interpretation or implication of the findings (often in the discussion or conclusion)
Please note that not all articles follow this precise format, but the above components provide a good guide. Regardless, recall that a suitable article should have the following components: an abstract, introduction, methodology section, and a discussion and/or conclusion. As you read, highlight key sentences or write out the key points (e.g., hypothesis, research question, data, etc.) for each paragraph. Do not attempt to complete this assignment by merely reading the abstract or article once.
After identifying and noting the key points, ask yourself the following questions:
How does this study address the questions that were posed?
What is the main contribution of the study?
How convincing are the results? Are any results particularly surprising?
What are the limitations?
How could the author(s) alter their data, methods, approach, or analysis to strengthen their argument?
3. Summary and paraphrase
As indicated above, one of the main goals of this assignment is to communicate, in a concise manner, the main points of the article: the research questions and/or hypotheses, the data and methods the author(s) used to answer or test them, the results they arrived at, and the overall significance of the study. The summary/paraphrase section should not include any personal opinion or critique—and it must be in your own words. Do not include any direct quotes in your assignment! In an assignment of this size and with this purpose, it is imperative that you paraphrase the author—that is, putting their ideas in your own words.
Suggested length: 500 words (divided into more than one paragraph)
4. Critical response
Having summarized and paraphrased the article, the next step is to critically respond to it. Your critical response can take several different directions but might include: a short discussion of the persuasiveness of the argument, the limitations of the argument, and/or aspects where the author(s) could have improved the article or done something differently.
Suggested length: 250 words (one to two paragraphs)
5. Asking ChatGPT for “critical response”
First, students will copy and paste the abstract, introduction, methodology, and discussion and/or conclusion of their article into a word document. 1 Students will then access ChatGPT following this link: https://chat.openai.com/auth/login. Once they have gained access to the free version of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5), they will type “Critically respond to this text: “[the abstract, introduction, methodology, and discussion and/or conclusion portions of the article]” 2 into the “Send a message” text box. They will then copy the output that ChatGPT provides and attach it as an appendix at the end of the assignment.
6. Critiquing ChatGPT
Students will then critique ChatGPT’s output by comparison. In other words, how does ChatGPT’s summary and critical response compare to your own? The critique can take a few different formats but should include: a short discussion of where ChatGPT was successful and where it was lacking (the merits and limitations of ChatGPT) and a commentary on the risks and concerns for ChatGPT in academia.
Suggested length: 250 words (one to two paragraphs)
In total, the complete assignment should be 1,000 words (max) The purpose of this assignment is to practice concision. You will be penalized if you exceed this length.
The last page of your assignment should be an appendix of ChatGPT’s output.
Four distinct components of the responses will be assessed:
Summary and paraphrasing
Critical response
Critique of ChatGPT
Writing and presentation
Each of these is taken into consideration in assigning the grade.
1. Summary and paraphrasing
Includes a thesis statement, which briefly states the main goal of the article that was selected.
Provides a brief summary of the article, highlighting: the research question/hypotheses, data and methods, findings, and significance of the article.
References to the article are in the students’ own words and paraphrases are appropriately signaled and cited.
Appropriate level of detail is provided (neither too little nor too much)
2. Critical response
Provides a critical response to the article, discussing the article’s: strengths and/or weaknesses, persuasiveness, and limitations.
Assessment of the article is factually correct.
Appropriate level of detail is provided.
3. Critique of ChatGPT
Provides a discussion of the merits and limitations of ChatGPT in comparison to their own summary and critical response.
Includes a commentary on the risks and concerns for ChatGPT in academia.
4. Writing and presentation
Writing is clear and grammatically correct; there is a clear indication that the paper has been proofread.
Paper is logically and effectively organized.
Paper includes reference to the selected article and in-text citations, using CJPS, are included where appropriate.
Paper does not include any direct quotes.
Formatting follows the correct guidelines, including font size (see style guidelines) and length (1,000 words maximum)
The ChatGPT output is attached as an appendix.

students will receive up to 40 points for answering the journal questions included in the syllabus. Each question is worth 4 points. Students will be evaluated on the following: 1) ability to articulate a clear thesis; 2) textual evidence/discussion of relevant passage (properly cited-including page numbers); and 3) clarity of argument. Each journal question corresponds to the readings of the week. You will be graded on your ability to discuss the relevant assigned readings and answering the question that I asked. While this is an opportunity for students to write without time constraints, journal entries will be evaluated on the basis of their ability to discuss assigned readings from my course. Students who do not discuss the assigned readings will not receive appropriate credit. IF STUDENTS DO NOT ANSWER MY QUESTIONS OR USE THE RELEVANT TEXTS FOR EACH JOURNAL, STUDENTS WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE JOURNAL ANSWER.

You have to choose one of the 5 policies (the one you are most comfortable with)

You have to choose one of the 5 policies (the one you are most comfortable with) which you believe is the best to go forward as a climate change solution. I personally believe either number 4 or 5 would be the best and most realistic but you are free to choose another if you can demonstrate it is the best. You have to argue (thesis) using scholarly sources (no specific number required but use at least 3 as it is a research paper) why it is the best. Argue its strengths and mention a couple of weaknesses. Finally, you have to demonstrate how it is feasible politically. The full instructions are in the attached pdf file. Thank you very much:)
