This poem should be written in the spirit of John Keats’ notion of Negative Capability, a term he coined in a letter he wrote to his brothers George and Tom in 1817. Inspired by Shakespeare’s work, he describes it as “being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.”
This poem should situate within or embody the definition of an emotion you’ve chosen from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.
The emotion I chose: “Keir”: Which is an ill-fated attempt to reenact a beloved memory years later, returning to a place that once felt like home, only to find it now feels uncannily off, like walking through a wax museum of your own childhood.

Read those poems out loud.
Think about those poems and the messages they send.
Now click the Text Response and post your thoughts about:
1) What are the themes of these 2 poems?
2) When you read the poems out loud, do you hear rhythm? Answer by completing this sentence: The poem sounds like

I need 5 poems in total, all must have a common theme. I’d like to use Greece as a common theme. Perhaps include Greek mythology in modern day greece in 2 poems so that I can tweak them accordingly. Have other poems describe the imagery of Greece. Use images of Ancient Epidavros, Nafplio, Athens, Paros, Milos, etc. for inspiration of imagery details, also include details of water, sunrises & sunsets, food, etc. If you have other ideas of how to use the theme of Greece, feel free to suggest.

You will analyze the poem from a broad perspective, interpret the poem more closely with a detailed approach, then compile your views in a coherent essay, making references to information raised in class as well as ideas from previous poems. he essay must make direct (word-for-word) reference to at least two different poems previously discussed in class (see below). These references can be as short as a few words or as long as several lines. Regardless of the length of the references, they must appear in quotation marks and must be followed by MLA-styled parenthetical references to author and page number.
Poems for reference:
1. “Leaving You” by Lily Brett
2. “I Was Not There” by Karen Gershon

Below you will find 3 questions related to themes expressed in poetry this semester. For each question, you must identify three poems (see poems identified below) from the Schiff anthology which speak to, satisfy, illustrate and/or comment on the specific topic (9 different poems total). For each poem, you must write a brief analysis of at least 100 words. You can make reference to the poem in whole or in part, but any references must tie in to the relevant topic. Simply quoting a poem will not satisfy the response; without analyzing the poetry, responses will not earn full credit. Any parts of any poem referenced directly must include quotation marks and the poet’s last name.
Questions:
1. We can see how poems use different forms of IMAGERY to portray a certain scene, create a mood, or draw out a feeling from the reader that will contribute to the speaker’s overall desire for the poem. Since images can impact readers differently, you are to identify three different poems which present imagery that assist you in more fully grasping what you believe to be the speaker’s intent. Consider the use of color, sound, light, texture, etc. Be sure to explain the impact of the imagery on your overall understanding of the poem. Simply identifying that imagery is present will not satisfy the question; references must be analyzed.
-Poems to be analyzed for imagery:
1. “Never Shall I Forget” by Ellie Wiesel
2. “Treblinka” by Michael Hamburger
3. “Farewell to Maria” by Tadeusz Borowski
2. Several examples of poems reference the dynamic among PARENTS AND CHILDREN. Sometimes they present from the parents’ point of view and sometimes from the children’s point of you. As these circumstances are portrayed, readers will have different feelings about the poem and the events experienced. Identify three different poems which present family dynamics and explain the impact on you as a reader. Be sure to include why or how you feel the way you do with regard to the presence of these role players within a family. Whether you select poems which reference adults or children (or both), you must justify the use of these references and analyze their impact on your overall understanding of the poem.
-Poems to be analyzed for parents and children:
1. “Both Your Mothers” by Jerzy Ficowski
2. “I Was Not There” by Karen Gershon
3. ‘Magda Goebbels” by W.D. Snodgrass
3.Among the most compelling issues present is the guilt portrayed by survivors, simply because they survived. Select three poems which present elements of SURVIVOR GUILT. Then explain the impact of such guilt, including shame, embarrassment, or failure of some duty or responsibility. Be sure to analyze how these portrayals form your opinions of the poet, the topics expressed, and the experiences that led to these feelings.
-Poems to be analyzed for survivor’s guilt:
1. “I Did Not Manage to Save” by Jerzy Ficowski
2. “History and Reality” by Stephen Spender
3. “I, the Survivor” by Bertolt Brecht
