Access to Healthcare Community health centers provide primary health care services to more than 22 million people across the United States. This assignment is inspired by the project of Thomas Thwaites, “How I built a toaster”, You watched his video in week one of this course. His project can be viewed on youtube at Thomas Thwaites: How I built a toaster (TED talk on youtube). Thwaites’ project directs our attention to the basic materials that are used in fabricated technology. When we focus on “design” and “making”, we often forget about the manual labour and material resources that are at the very beginning of a fabrication or manufacturing process. This is why we do this assignment.
This assignment is also inspired by the course readings that are focused on how computing technology is built using specific kinds of rare minerals, dangerous plastics, and material from other kinds of extractive industries. In other words, all our “software” runs on hardware, and we need to understand that technologies are fabricated out of down-to-earth stuff.
Instructions
Watch the video by Thomas Thwaites. Note that he breaks the toaster into material that is organic, mineral, or lab-made, or other, and has to complete research in order to learn about the material. Note also that his aim is to decompose the object beyond its functional components (such as “levers” or “tray”) and to find basic or elemental components.
Select a piece of technology that you can take apart. It can be anything (stapler, vacuum cleaner, old phone, old tv remote, radio, etc). Have fun selecting it!
Some parts may separate easily, but others will require intervention. Use gloves and be careful. You want to break it up into parts that can help you identify some of the stages in the manufacturing process. Your aim is to break it up into parts that can be identified with particular plastics, rubbers, metals, minerals, fluids.
Take photographs of the process of its decomposition.
Once it has been separated into its essential components, which should be as basic as possible (organic, mineral, or elemental), lay these out beside each other, on a table, and take pictures of each. (follow the presentation in Thwaites video!)
Complete some research about the components, to learn about their composition, and their lineage (Where are they made? are they mined? etc).
Create a table that documents all these components and their proper names. Insert your photos in the table, and label as needed. You can use powerpoint or word file to present your table.
Use your research (step #6), and write a 700-word description of the process of destruction, listing the various kinds of materials that you found in all the components, and explaining what you learned about where these materials come from, in the making of the technology.

I recommend you complete this assignment using Excel. If you have another software that enables you to work with data and create graphs you may use this.

Steps
Choose a topic related to Race and Inequality in the US, i.e. wealth disparity, labor market outcomes, home ownership, etc.
Explore ACS via IMPUS (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/sda/ Links to an external site.), BLS (https://www.bls.gov/cps/demographics.htm) Links to an external site. or Census (https://www.census.gov/data.html Links to an external site.) to find relevant data for this topic or another data source which I must approve first. You may need to adjust your topic depending on availability of data.
Download data of interest into excel (for BLS this will be tables that are already made). Make sure you record the data source and year. Represent this data in excel graphs. Choose how to organize the data on graphs such that it is easy to read and understand. Make at least four graphs. All graphs should be clearly labeled. Clearly label the graphs in excel tabs as Graph 1, Graph 2, etc. You may choose not to present all the data you downloaded. That is ok.
Write up one to two pages of observations based on the tables you downloaded and graphs you created. You can use bullet points if you want. In your observations focus on the following:
What correlations do you notice?
How might these correlations be misleading?
What further investigation would be necessary in order to show causation rather than just correlation?

Problem Set: Inventory Aggregation
Consider the information and data presented in the scanned document “Managing Uncertainty in a Supply Chain:
Safety Inventory” case study “Should Packing Be Postponed to the DC [Distribution Center]?” (Page 353 – 354 in
the scanned document), that concerns inventory management at Penang Electronics, where orders are placed
weekly, and the lead time for receiving orders is 9 weeks. Pay close attention to the details of the case study,
but ignore the list of questions posed on Page 354.
For this assignment, do the following:
Compare the two alternatives under consideration for final labeling and packaging:
1. At the production faculty in Malaysia before being shipped to the DC (the current approach) and
2. At the DC in St. Louis (i.e., postponing labeling and packaging until just before shipment).
The comparison should consider the savings in annual holding cost with aggregation compared to the increased
production costs of aggregation. When determining if aggregation is warranted, note that how inventory is
managed does not need to be consistent across the three products (computers, printers, scanners). That is,
aggregation may be worthwhile for only one or two of the three products, and this approach can be
implemented.
When analyzing the two alternatives, use a target product fill rate of 99%. Assume that the demand across the
