Social Science Popular Article Assignment_OP2
This assignment challenges you to research, analyze, and establish a psychological profile regarding a chosen fandom.
Objectives:
Locate and examine printed, digital, and visual materials (CO 1)
Apply course theme to research in the Social Sciences (CO 2)
Demonstrate critical thinking skills (CO 3, CO 4, CO 5)
Practice integrating and evaluating source material(s) (CO 4, CO 5)
Compose appropriate text with conventional use of language (CO 4, CO 5)
Document sources through proper APA citation (CO 5)
Directions:
The goal of this assignment is to explore identity from the social science perspective, then translate your research for a general online reading audience, specifically a popular article for Psychology Today.
For this assignment, you will select a fandom, such as a musical, movie, television, or athletic fanbase, and explore how this shared passion helps define the fanbase and shape the world around them. Your research will include the demographics for this fanbase, their established values, and their psychological traits.
You will then imagine you are a Psychology Today contributor and create a 500-800-word article that includes a title, key points, subheadings, relevant visuals (if needed), and documentation of research.
Here are some questions to get you started:
Who or what has influenced this fandom?
What social influence has this fandom had on others?
What are the demographics for this fanbase in terms of age, gender, location, income, and education level?
What creates a sense of community within this fanbase?
What is their online presence like? What platforms do they visit most frequently? What kind of content do they engage or post?
How does this fandom express itself?
Does this fanbase link itself to certain political or social issues?
What is their general attitude towards similar artists, actors, athletes, etc.?
Are there subgroups within the fanbase?
Does this fanbase have any toxic behaviors, such as cyberbullying?
Research and Demographics: Conduct research on your chosen fanbase. Explore online resources such as music publications, and academic articles (avoiding fan forums as primary sources). Identify key demographic characteristics associated with the fanbase, including age, race, education level, income range, gender, and potentially political viewpoints or socioeconomic factors. Be sure to discuss how being a part of this fanbase impacts identity, including both positive and negative aspects of such fandom. Feel free to also interview members of the fanbase. Two to three credible sources are needed for this assignment. Utilize the FTCC Library’s databases and look for current sources (published within the last five years). Google Scholar is another option. Your PSY 150 textbook is also another option to consider. These sources will be cited within the article you produce as well as on the reference page.
Psychological Spotlight: Select one or two psychological elements from the following list that resonate most with your chosen fanbase:
Emotional Connection: How does the music, movie/tv series, or sport evoke strong emotions in fans?
Need for Affiliation: How does the fanbase offer a sense of belonging and connection with like-minded individuals?
Esteem Needs: How can involvement in the fanbase boost a fan’s self-esteem?
Confirmation Bias: Does the fanbase exhibit a tendency to seek out information that reinforces their views about the artist, genre, team, etc. ?
In-Group Favoritism: Does the fanbase display a preference for their chosen artist, team, character, genre, etc. over others, potentially with hostility towards other fan groups?
Structure
Introduction: Briefly introduce the chosen fanbase and its cultural significance. Highlight the psychological aspects you’ll be exploring.
Demographics (1-2 paragraphs): Discuss the available information on the fanbase’s demographics, such as age range, gender, socioeconomic background, etc. You can cite studies or reports from reputable sources.
Psychological Analysis (2-3 paragraphs): This is the heart of your article. Here, you’ll dive into the chosen psychological element(s) and explain how it contributes to a strong sense of identity within the fanbase. Use specific examples to illustrate your points. For instance, discussing how fans create online communities to address the need for affiliation.
Conclusion: Briefly summarize your key points and emphasize the importance of the chosen fanbase in understanding the link between fandom and identity.
Article Format:
Aim for a word count of 500-800 words.
Maintain a formal and informative writing style, similar to an academic article.
Title
Key Points
Subheadings
Relevant Visuals
Cite at least two to three credible sources in APA format with in-text references as well as a separate reference page.
Remember to present material objectively, as you are reporting on the fanbase, not judging it.

Access to Healthcare Community health centers provide primary health care services to more than 22 million people across the United States. Each health center provides for the unique needs of patients in its immediate community. Many of the patients that are seen at health centers represent uninsured or underinsured patients and/or those with limited access to healthcare. This assignment will help you identify service delivery needs and provide quality recommendations for improving access to healthcare. Read the following case study from your textbook: Case 20: Big Brother is Watching: Utilizing Clinical Decision Support as a Tool to Limit Adverse Drug Events Then, do the following: Conduct research on “community health centers” by reviewing the National Association of Community Health Centers website at About Our Health Centers – NACHC Choose a geographic region or location and research the types of services delivered at the community health centers in that area. Describe the location including the demographics such as race and ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, age, education level, morbidity and mortality statistics, and other common or relevant health statistics. Identify the other social services that are available to your selected community to strengthen and sustain the community health system in the location you have chosen. Identify and discuss the barriers to access to healthcare. Explain how healthcare providers can improve access to quality care and reach their target population. Write a 3 to 5 page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

This assignment is inspired by the project of Thomas Thwaites, “How I built a toaster”, You watched his video in week one of this course. His project can be viewed on youtube at Thomas Thwaites: How I built a toaster (TED talk on youtube). Thwaites’ project directs our attention to the basic materials that are used in fabricated technology. When we focus on “design” and “making”, we often forget about the manual labour and material resources that are at the very beginning of a fabrication or manufacturing process. This is why we do this assignment.
This assignment is also inspired by the course readings that are focused on how computing technology is built using specific kinds of rare minerals, dangerous plastics, and material from other kinds of extractive industries. In other words, all our “software” runs on hardware, and we need to understand that technologies are fabricated out of down-to-earth stuff.
Instructions
Watch the video by Thomas Thwaites. Note that he breaks the toaster into material that is organic, mineral, or lab-made, or other, and has to complete research in order to learn about the material. Note also that his aim is to decompose the object beyond its functional components (such as “levers” or “tray”) and to find basic or elemental components.
Select a piece of technology that you can take apart. It can be anything (stapler, vacuum cleaner, old phone, old tv remote, radio, etc). Have fun selecting it!
Some parts may separate easily, but others will require intervention. Use gloves and be careful. You want to break it up into parts that can help you identify some of the stages in the manufacturing process. Your aim is to break it up into parts that can be identified with particular plastics, rubbers, metals, minerals, fluids.
Take photographs of the process of its decomposition.
Once it has been separated into its essential components, which should be as basic as possible (organic, mineral, or elemental), lay these out beside each other, on a table, and take pictures of each. (follow the presentation in Thwaites video!)
Complete some research about the components, to learn about their composition, and their lineage (Where are they made? are they mined? etc).
Create a table that documents all these components and their proper names. Insert your photos in the table, and label as needed. You can use powerpoint or word file to present your table.
Use your research (step #6), and write a 700-word description of the process of destruction, listing the various kinds of materials that you found in all the components, and explaining what you learned about where these materials come from, in the making of the technology.

I recommend you complete this assignment using Excel. If you have another software that enables you to work with data and create graphs you may use this.
Steps
Choose a topic related to Race and Inequality in the US, i.e. wealth disparity, labor market outcomes, home ownership, etc.
Explore ACS via IMPUS (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/sda/ Links to an external site.), BLS (https://www.bls.gov/cps/demographics.htm) Links to an external site. or Census (https://www.census.gov/data.html Links to an external site.) to find relevant data for this topic or another data source which I must approve first. You may need to adjust your topic depending on availability of data.
Download data of interest into excel (for BLS this will be tables that are already made). Make sure you record the data source and year. As well as a full definition of the variables you are working with. For ACS, example, click on codebook (https://sda.usa.ipums.org/sdaweb/docs/us2019a/DOC/nes.htm Links to an external site.)
Represent this data in excel graphs. Choose how to organize the data on graphs such that it is easy to read and understand. Make at least four graphs. All graphs should be clearly labeled. Clearly label the graphs in excel tabs as Graph 1, Graph 2, etc. You may choose not to present all the data you downloaded. That is ok.
Write up one to two pages of observations based on the tables you downloaded and graphs you created. You can use bullet points if you want. In your observations focus on the following:
What correlations do you notice?
How might these correlations be misleading?
What further investigation would be necessary in order to show causation rather than just correlation?
7. Submit excel and word document to me via Canvas.
