Identifying functions of behavior is an important step in any development of creating an intervention plan. This step helps to reduce the implementation of ineffective behavioral support plans. For this discussion question, please read the case study of ShariLynn located on pages 111–113 of your Functional Assessment text. Then, write a substantial discussion post on the following:
Identify the function of ShariLynn’s challenging behaviors. To do this, analyze the ABC data found on pages 112–113.
Provide a rationale for why you selected that function, after you have identified the function of ShariLynn’s behavior.
Provide an explanation as to why the other functions are not applicable for this case.
Response Guidelines
Read the posts of your peers and respond to one. Your response should be substantive and demonstrate your understanding of the material. What aspects of the post do you like or agree with? Are there areas that are not clear? Did the post spark questions that you would like to ask your peer? In this, and in all of your courseroom posts, be sure to keep your tone scholarly, respectful, and professional.

In the past, most functional analyses consisted of the four conditions alternated to determine their effects on behavior. However, in addressing the various needs of challenging behaviors, many forms of functional analysis have been created.
For this discussion, think about a behavior that you have encountered in the past. Now, complete the following:
Describe the type of functional analysis that would be most ideal for identifying the function of the behavior. Explain your reasons for choosing that type of functional analysis.
Describe the conditions you would include in that assessment.
Rationalize your reason for including those conditions.

Instructions
For this assignment, you will fill out the DSM-5 Intervention Matrix Template [DOCX], as a foundation for your ASD treatment plan you will complete in the Weeks 7 and 9 assignments.
Download and save DSM-5 Intervention Matrix Template [DOCX] to your computer.
Review the Core Autism Symptoms and Behavior Analytic Intervention table in this template.
Define operationally one behavior that would fall under each category. You may review the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 (GARS-2) Sample Results [DOCX] (or other resources) for some possibilities.
Behaviors can be something you are actually seeing as a clinician (remember to leave out all names and identifying information), or can be hypothetical behaviors or behaviors you find in a case study.
Make sure definition is observable and measurable, clearly stated, and includes examples and non-examples.
Review the peer-reviewed literature to find behavior analytic intervention that would be appropriate for that particular behavior. You might start your search by reviewing evidence-based practices in this week’s readings.Week 5: DSM-5 Potential Intervention MatrixLinks to an external site. reading list.
Make sure the intervention is behavior analytic and has a strong scientific evidence base.
Review the literature to find at least two peer-reviewed journal articles that support that intervention. One must have been written in the last 5 years. (Contact instructor if you are unable to find this.)
Be sure to consider functions (hypothetically if needed) when reviewing the literature, if you are targeting a challenging behavior.
Fill out the remainder of the DSM-5 Intervention Matrix Template.Write an ABA intervention strategy you could use, and cite your chosen journal articles. (This should be 2-4 paragraphs.) Remember that you could combine several strategies (you don’t have to for purposes of this assignment), or you can use the same strategy for different behaviors (differences would be found as you develop your comprehensive plan).Note: This should be written below the table in the template, after the “ABA Intervention Strategy” header.
Overall, your assignment submission will be assessed based on the following criteria:
Define at least one behavior for each of the seven DSM-5 criteria: Deficits.
Identify at least one behavior analytic intervention for the defined behavior for each of the seven DSM-5 criteria: Deficits.
Describe an ABA intervention strategy that is supported by specific evidence from credible and relevant sources.
Convey purpose in a well-organized text, incorporating appropriate evidence and tone in grammatically sound sentences.
Apply APA style and formatting to scholarly writing.
Additional Requirements
Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:
Template: You must submit your completed DSM-5 Intervention Matrix Template [DOCX] for this assignment.
References: Cite a minimum of four sources of scholarly or professional evidence. At least one of the resources should be no more than five years old.
APA formatting: In-text citations and reference list should follow current APA style and formatting.

Overview
In the Week 3, you evaluated two behavior analytic theories that have led to the development of basic principles. In this assignment, you will be tasked with researching the applied literature regarding the interventions that are based on those principles and theories to change a behavior. This behavior, specifically, must be a behavior to increase (e.g., consuming vegetables, increasing exercise) and cannot be a challenging behavior (e.g., aggression, self-injury, elopement). Instead of writing a formal paper, you are going to create an eye catching and creative pamphlet (that you might place in the lobby of an office) that outlines the current research, the ethics of common intervention strategies, and how a clinician will compassionately implement them in practice.
Instructions
Choose a behavior to increase and research the current applied literature that uses interventions based on the basic theories and principles that you discussed during your Week 3 assignment. If you are unsure if your behavior is appropriate to use, please reach out to the instructor for additional assistance. Using Canva (Canva.com), create a free account and use a brochure template of your choosing to create your assignment. There are multiple free templates to use. You can also create your own using other software options if you would prefer. The brochure should discuss a behavior to increase, a way it can be operationally defined, and the current literature that uses intervention strategies based on the theories you discussed in your Week 3 assignment. Make sure to include the following components:
Include an engaging title that will capture the interest of your reader.
Provide a brief overview of the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and how it relates to radical behaviorism. Include the seven dimensions as outlined by Baer et al. (1968).
Discuss the importance of data collection, dimensional measurement, and the use of basic principles to create technologies to change behavior.
Identify the socially relevant behavior of interest and define it using a topographical or functional definition. Include a proposed measurement system that describes the relevant dimension(s) of measurement.
Provide a succinct discussion of the current applied literature that uses technologies informed by the theories you discussed in Week 3. These articles should be, at a maximum, no older than seven years.
Discuss any gaps you found in the literature and include areas for future research as discussed by the researchers in the literature you reviewed.
Discuss the ethical considerations of the intervention strategies, making reference to the Belmont Report and the BACB ethical code of conduct.
Complete your brochure with a compassion mission statement outlining how you, as a clinician, will be using these strategies to promote ethical and compassionate service delivery. Make sure to cite the Capella Compassion Code.
Note: Design the brochure with visually appealing elements: images, icons, infographics, etc. Remember this is not a paper, so your sentences need to be complete and professional, but concise. The language you choose needs to be technical and valid, but also approachable and client friendly. This is an opportunity to practice how to balance your professional writing. Do not hesitate to reach out to the instructor or the assistant instructor(s) for additional support.

Competency 1: Evaluate research in the experimental analysis of behavior.Evaluate the relevant applied literature using technologies informed by the theories from the week three presentation.
Analyze current gaps in the literature.
Competency 2: Distinguish features of experimental analysis of behavior (EAB) research from applied behavior analysis (ABA) research and identify features of translational research that bridge both types.Describe the field of applied behavior analysis as it relates to radical behaviorism.
Define a socially relevant behavior, including a description of one way in which to measure it.
Competency 4: Evaluate the core ethical requirements of behavior analytic research.Evaluate the ethical guidelines of human research using the Belmont Report, BACB code of conduct, and the Capella Compassion Code.
Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology.Demonstrate an academic writing style through well-organized prose that follows assignment guidelines and strikes a balance between technical jargon and consumer friendly language.
Demonstrate compliance with APA style, citation, and referencing guidelines.
