It makes the leader–member relationship the pivotal concept in the leadership process. While other theories emphasize leadership from the point of view of the leader or the follower and context, leader–member exchange (LMX) theory conceptualizes leadership as a process that is centered on the interactions between leaders and followers.
Research into LMX theory has also focused on how exchanges between leaders and followers can be used for leadership development (Graen & Uhl-Bien, 1991). Leadership development emphasizes that leaders should develop high-quality exchanges with all of their followers rather than just a few. It attempts to make all followers feel as if they are a part of the in-group and, by so doing, avoids the inequities and negative implications of being in an out-group.
