Week 4 Application Assignment
Dissect Job Posting
Total Points: 20 points
Due Date: Sunday before 11:59pm
Instructions
For this assignment, you will locate a job posting to analyze transferable skills/experience and think through what you are looking for in a job descriiption, as well as how you would tailor your resume. Actually applying to the job is optional so you don’t need to work up a specific resume for this position. The purpose of this assignment is to learn the process of job dissection during an active job search, a process repeated for every job posting where you want consideration as a serious candidate.
The Job Posting
Go to Handshake, Indeed.com, or LinkedIn (or any other job search engine) to locate a job posting of interest.
Copy the posting detail into a Word document or PDF the webpage that you can mark up and submit with your notes/comments.
Next, dissect the job descriiption using the prompts below. Highlight key words/phrases or use the comment/highlight features in Word or PDF, depending on how you saved the posting.
Add comments (either in document or at the end) indicating how you might respond to at least 3 of the aspects you highlight.
What to consider when dissecting a job posting pre-application:
What is the employer trying to “solve” with the role? What is the “big picture” purpose of the position? (Tip: Search the employer website – Google the company- to find key information about how the job fits into the larger scope of the company’s purpose.)
What will you be doing daily on the job? Visualize the day-to-day.
What skills are necessary to be successful in the role? (Hard skills, soft skills, technical skills)
What are your transferable skills and experiences related to the job?
How does this position fit/connect with your personal BIG WHY?
