Week 6 Readings: Chapter 29, Chapter 30, and Chapter 31
Two commentators are arguing on a political radio show. Dr. James Pacifist (perhaps it is Dr. Jane Realist) states that the military situation in South Vietnam at the end of 1968 proves that the conflict is unwinnable, and has left a lasting stain on President Lyndon Johnson’s administration. Mr. John Warhawk (or is it Senator Randall Real Politic) claims that the average soldier was betrayed by the government and if more troops were sent to South Vietnam that country can still be saved from communism.
You have been divided into two groups. For this forum, Group A (Last name A-M) will assume the role of an individual endorsing Dr. Pacifist’s stance, while Group B (Last name N-Z) will argue in support of further escalation endorsed by Mr. Warhawk. You do not need to restrict yourself to the moral justification. The arguments for, and against, the United States involvement took many avenues. Try not to make assumptions. Instead, assume the historical role of someone who lived in the United States during the era. While addressing the legacy of the war you can move to more recent decades. While defending your stance be sure to address the effect that ground troops had on the war regarding potential failure or success during combat and how the escalation of troops affected anti-war movement. Finally, be sure to bring in the potential effects the war had on Johnson’s presidency and the legacy of Vietnam.
Because the use of AI keeps creeping into my classrooms, I am going to insist that you all reference the textbook in your responses, make sure your response reflects the chapters. After your initial submission, you are then required to continue the debate by responding to three of your classmates. Your responses should contribute to the dialogue.

Russia, a world power and the largest and most populated of all the countries in Europe, was affected by the same forces of change that swept through the continent during this period of history. Explain how and why. Give examples.

You can still make changes to your paper based on feedback from TurnItin, feedback from our Writing Center, or feedback from other people who read your draft. That is not okay; you need to use your own words when writing your paper. If you see those sorts of problems, then fix them and resubmit your paper. The best advice I can give is: Do not submit your paper in the first place if you know that you copied and pasted from sources. That is plagiarism.

There is no defined word count rather the response will be evaluated on a balance of coverage and supportive examples; summarizing more material is not necessarily better than writing a concise, but effective summary.

You will choose a topic of your choice. I suggest that you research a topic (a question) you are very curious about, something not that common and that has to do with different cultures. Be as specific as possible. Think about a population or populations, two or three variables, time, and location. For example, if your topic is “Awareness of clothing production in contemporary society ” you can look at which countries our clothing comes from/where they are produced, who produce them and how. You might want to begin by looking at how significant clothing is in the US and into the clothing practices and influences on clothing decisions. Then you can ask your research subjects about these questions. They can look at the tags in their clothing. Your research subjects can be your family, friends, people who accepted to participate that you don’t know personally. You can instead or in addition look into changes in clothing between two generations, and/or compare clothing in two different countries. Your research should include what the literature and/or what other scholars have said about this topic, but then, you will need to base your findings mostly on first-hand information by conducting interviews. You can also use participant observation and can conduct a survey or a questionnaire to support, contradict or expand. Divide your population for example, into ages or generations, religious/religious, financial stability, country of origin, background (city vs. rural), and gender. Please read carefully as you will earn points for the research’s content as well as for respecting the deadlines and following the instructions. Late papers will not be accepted. See the syllabus for make-up work. Ask ahead of time if you do not understand something about the instructions. Make sure to grammar and spell check your paper and to divide your writing into paragraphs. The maximum of points you will earn for this project is 30. The points are divided into the following: 5 for parts/subtitles 6 clarity, organization and cohesiveness 5 for addressing the topic adequately 5 for the interviews, questionnaires and/or survey 3 for citation 2 for page limit 4 for references. 30 total The research project should be 8-10 double-spaced pages long in Times or Arial font.
