Part l:
When taking a look at the similarities and differences between Stefani and Battuta’s descriptions of the Black Death in the readings that we were given it shows mostly differences. The main difference that is seen is that the Islamic response to the Black Death was that of people staying together and worshiping in the Mosque. This is explained when Stefani explains that God enlightened their affliction because of their prayers deaths never reached over 2,000 a day compared to other cities near who exceeded that number (Battuta 1). In comparison to the European response to the plague it was much different as described in the Florentine Chronicle where it states, “Frightened people abandoned the house and fled to another. Those in town fled to villages” (Stefani 1). This is seen as part of the issue talked about in the “Ordinance of Laborers” as people were fleeing and perishing it made for a struggling community (White 1).
Part ll:
When looking at the relationship between the role of women and Jews the relationship seen between the two is in both scenarios men are leading the defeat for both parties. In these sources, given to learn about the narratives of women in European societies, they explain “that an emerging class created new forms of political and social organization that tended to reduce options for women,” (Kelly-Gadol 175) as said by Kelly-Gadol in the reading. Women had less opportunities than men which led most to their home and children. On the same topic, in Malleus Maleficarum, it explains how women were seen to be intellectually even with children, as many men saw women as crazy witches (Kramer 79-81). In comparison, many Jews were persecuted and burned as a result of fear stricken people from the Plague (Marcus 1). Both women and the Jews did not deserve to be treated the way that they did and similarly they were helpless in these situations as they were both not strong enough to fight back.

Week 4 Discussion Board
Write at least one concise paragraph to address each prompt. For Part II, you may want to use more than one paragraph. Use at least 3 examples for Part I and 3 examples for Part II. Also, include in-text citations whenever you quote or paraphrase the readings.
Part I:
For this discussion board, I would like you to compare Marchione di Coppo Stefani and Ibn Battuta’s descriptions of the Black Death. What do these sources tell us about the European and Islamic response to the plague? Please reference The Florentine Chronicle and “The Plague in Damascus” in your response. In addition, use at least one example from either “Ordinance of Laborers” or “Sources for the Black Death and the Jews” to support your answer. Did any of the readings (or Professor Wood’s lectures) challenge what you already knew about the Black Death?
Part II:
One of the things we want to get you thinking about in this course is how narratives surrounding events, groups of people, and social practices change over time. How did narratives regarding gender change during the medieval period and the Renaissance? Connect these narratives (that is, what people believed about women) with changes in how women were treated in European society. Next, compare treatment of women to the persecution of Jews. For your thesis statement, explain what this comparison between women and the Jews tells us about the relationship between persecution and massive, destabilizing events.
In your response, use material from the following readings: Joan Kelly Gadol’s “Did Women Have a Renaissance?”; “Sources for the Black Death and the Jews,” and Heinrich Kramer’s Malleus Maleficarum. I would also recommend using Professor Wood’s Week 4, Lecture 2.

Part I:
Interconnected shows the relations with different groups, whether it’s drastic or miniscule. “Secret History of the Mongols”, doesn’t contain explicit information regarding other civilizations, but the explanation of outposts to reduce inconveniences imply constant outsiders entering and providing new ideas and possible goods(Rachewiltz 202). Also, the Mongols were nomads, so they were already interacting with close territories like Islamic nations, and assimilating into their conquered lands. Nicolo and Maffeo Polo’s journey more explicitly demonstrates Europe’s connection with the Mongols, specifically how they met Kublai Khan and were given a feast, showing a positive relation(Polo 2). This is further demonstrated with the comparison of money making of Yuan China with “secret of alchemists”, demonstrating thinking from different perspectives(Polo 4). The interconnection between Islamic nations and Europe is more directly demonstrated with Ibn Battuta’s interactions with Byzantine and “entry[s] into Constantinople”(Battuna 3). Christianity and Islam’s similarities and differences are also proof of interconnectedness with these two, specifically assimilation, with how the religion varies.
Part II:
There were different views concerning nomadic and sedentary civilizations, but both had their own advantages and disadvantages, and strength was needed for both. Something that seems universal in terms of Islamic values is the idea of social order and compassion. Social order was important because it’s key to keep civilizations in check, and with nomadic lifestyles being more libertarian, social order is more emphasized(Khadlan 1). Adding onto that, there has to be a sense of trust and compassion within societies. Whether it’s with “authorities and the government” or “for his family and his group”(Khadlan 7). This meant that compassion was important for Islamic values because it reinforced their beliefs under different circumstances.
