Instructions for Address the Opposing Viewpoints and Offer a Solution to Your Problem/Topic
Your goal in Essay 2 is to offer a solution to your opponents = readers who have the opposing/opposite point of view on your topic
While defending your position on your topic, you will identify a solution to the problem or issue at hand. An argument, in which only your views are presented and supported, is not an argument, since an argument has opposing views.
The most typical strategy for integrating opponents points of view into an argument is to think of the argument as a reasoned discussion, where those with contrary views argue particular opposing “points” on an issue. Your job is to now include viewpoints contrary to your own and then respond to those points, either with agreement (concession) or disagreement (refutation).
Remember to identify the issues in your thesis and explain why your issues are important. You should also demonstrate your authority of your topic by including your research to support your position and opinion so that your reader is willing to possibly agree with your research and interpretation of the topic and change their opinion.
For your research you must use citations for all your quotations, paraphrases, or summaries of another author’s facts and figures.

For this assignment, you will write a rhetorical analysis, a thesis-driven essay
For this assignment, you will write a rhetorical analysis, a thesis-driven essay in which you describe and evaluate a text’s rhetorical strategies/ tools. The text you will analyze for this assignment will be any political or persuasive speech. Usually students choose a political speech or a TED talk for this assignment. If you wish to choose any other speech, please see me with your thoughts. (https://www.ted.com/talks/quick-list).
In your analysis, you should identify and describe the rhetorical situation (genre, audience, purpose, stance, and context).
Use THREE Template from They Say, I Say, place these in bold and in italics.
Specifically, you should pay attention to:
the speaker’s primary argument
USE THREE THEY SAY I SAY TEMPLATES
secondary claims that support or extend the primary argument
types of evidence that the speaker uses to justify his or her claims
assumptions that the speaker makes about the topic or expects the audience to make about the topic
the organizational, mechanical, and rhetorical delivery of the argument and evidence.
Inclusion of at least 3 outside sources ((at minimum 3 outside sources 1 scholarly and 2 popular sources)
Because you are analyzing a video recording of the speech, you should also consider the speaker’s tone, gestures, and use of visuals.
Note that a successful rhetorical analysis does not offer an independent analysis or argument about the subject matter of a text; instead, it answers the following questions:
What rhetorical strategies does an author/ a text use to persuade its audience? Why?
To what effect?
Focus on Rhetorical Strategies; tone, appeal to logical fallacies, context, audience, metaphor, among others
Assume your audience for this essay is relying on you to properly analyze the speaker’s effectiveness, be sure to address aspects of strengths as well as weaknesses (or changes that could make the speech more effective).
Purpose and Outcomes The purpose of this assignment is to:
Break down and analyze the rhetorical moves made in a primary text, and then arrange and assemble those details in an essay explaining their overall purpose/effect for a specialized/academic audience.
Revise and edit multiple drafts to produce writing that is well organized, mechanically and grammatically sound, and mostly error free
Provide effective feedback on the writing of their peers, and both reflect upon and incorporate peer and instructor feedback through editing and revision.
I put an example of a template of they say i say.

Your task for this essay is to complete a ‘nexus analysis’ and report on your findings. You will need to go through the following steps. 1. Choose a nexus of practice that you believe is important. This nexus of practice will provide the focus for your nexus analysis. It could be a practice that happens in a physical place or it could be one that happens online. You might like to choose a practice that you are very familiar with and somehow involved in and you can consider public practices (like advertising or health communication for example) or more private practices. 2. In this nexus of practice identify a site of engagement (i.e. a context of situation at a particular moment in time), consisting of discourses in place, an interaction order, historical bodies. You could include an image of the nexus of practice in your essay. 3. For this site of engagement, you should answer the questions: ‘What action is going on here?’ and ‘How does discourse play a role in that action?’ Remember that discourse does not only have to be limited to the words people use but can include other modes as well. 4. Collect ‘data’ about what is going on, including especially discursive tools (see below). This can include: field notes of observations that you make, online texts and interactions with transcriptions if appropriate, news reports, commentaries, discussions from online forums (e.g., Facebook groups) where people talk about this nexus of practice. 5. Analyze your data and present your findings in the form of an analytical essay that pays attention to the following issues in order to answer the key questions ‘what action is going on here?’ and ‘how does discourse play a role in that action?’: a. Explain why you have chosen this particular nexus of practice and site of engagement; b. Describe the site in terms of discourses in place, interaction order and historical bodies; c. What are the kinds of social actions that are going on in this site of engagement? d. What role does discourse play in those actions? What role is played by other tools? e. Select a discursive tool (e.g. video speech, brochure, social media post) and analyze the discourse used. What kind of language is used? Why? What other kinds of semiotic modes are used? Why? What kinds of social actions are achieved with this discursive tool? What kinds of Discourses does this discursive tool connect to (e.g. legal, medical, commercial, cultural)? f. What does your analysis say about communication? What does it say about power relations? Your analytical essay should combine evidence from data sources with your descriptions and analysis. Where you comment on data, the data should be presented as figures in the text. For more details, please refer to the files I uploaded

EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE: You post should resemble this. I am using a different myth! Here is my post:
Myth: Early drug use is ok since it is just kids experimenting with lighter substances like alcohol or marijuana.
Early drug use being safe is not true. Early drugs, sometimes called gateway drugs, do contribute to more powerful drugs as well as impact the developing brain. Marijuana is legal but can serve to sensitize the developing brain to dopamine receptors and cravings (Panlilio et al). Early alcohol use is correlated to an increase in lifetime alcohol use and alcoholism. If alcohol use began by 14 years, there was a 47% rate of dependance vs only 9% rate of dependance if the user drank at 21 years .(NIAA)
Early substance experimentation, even with adult legal substances such as marijuana and alcohol, poses unique risks to young people such as altering neurotransmitter receptors and increasing the risk of later dependency.

Reader Responses Checklist
It is important to read and understand the assigned essays in the textbook. To provide
additional motivation for reading, you will be assigned five reader response papers
worth 5 points each. The response papers will assist in the practice of answering
questions in complete sentences, using direct quotations to support your answers, and
providing signal phrases leading into direct quotes, as well as writing in third person.
The checklist is as follows:
1) You must provide a title for all response papers by including the name of the
author and the title of the essay. For example:
Reader Response #1: Russell Mobley’s “Justice or Murder”
2) Begin your response by introducing the author (first and last name) and the
title of his/her work. For subsequent references to the author, use his/her last
name only.
3) Use third person (do not use first person or second person).
4) Answer the questions(s) directly and in complete sentences.
5) You will provide at least three direct quotations from the text to support your
answers and use signal phrases leading into the direct quotes. You must
include the page number(s) from your direct quotes (be sure to use the
correct edition of the Norton Field Guide to Writing). Do not use long
direct quotations.
6) Do not use contractions.
Response length: 1.5 to 2 pages (assignments that do not adhere to minimum page length
requirement will not be graded).

Chapter 1-Journal Entries: Review the rubric for writing Journals in Module One. Answer all of the following and Write a complete paragraph.
1. What is the purpose of the Johari Window? How can the Johari Window be of benefit to you?
2. Define emotional attachments and social ties and explain their importance in relationship to loneliness.
3. Explain how first impressions, stereotyping, and prejudices influence our perception of others.

Heterosexism is the existence of advantages and rewards on heterosexuals solely as a result of their sexual orientation. Many of the things that heterosexuals take for granted may be unavailable to gay or bisexual people. Make a list of the advantages a heterosexual “straight” has. If you are “straight,” what advantages do you enjoy that gay people are less likely to enjoy? Think hard—many of the things that heterosexuals take for granted are not equally available to everyone. Examples include displaying a picture of one’s loved one without fear of retaliation or ridicule; not having to hide parts of one’s life from family, friends, and coworkers; or having the loved one be legally recognized as the next-of-kin. When you have made your list, go to www.yahoo.com or www.google.com and type “heterosexism” into the search box. What items could be added to your list as a result of your search? Why do you think you didn’t see them earlier?
