America’s diverse culture was built on the lives of its native people and immigrants, beginning with the early settlements of the English and continuing through the arrival of enslaved Africans to Gadsden Wharf and the primarily European immigrants to Ellis Island. Each of these groups of people came from vastly different cultures and under vastly different circumstances. In this assignment, you are to step into the shoes of one of these immigrants and tell your story.
Select an immigrant experience addressed in Unit 3 that you would like to explore further. Imagine your life as someone who has been in pre-20th Century America for a year or less. Discuss the cultural traditions and artifacts that you might have brought with you.
Choose from one of the following; plan to avoid any that your ancestors might have experienced:
A Jewish immigrant, transported in steerage and arriving in New York with only a suitcase to live in the ghettos
An enslaved person of African origin, transported by ship and sold on the shores of America to live and work on a Southern plantation
An indentured servant from Europe arriving in debt and working towards freedom.
An immigrant from any other country traveling in steerage and landing at Ellis Island without any possessions and knowing no one. Describe their life in the big city, working on a farm, or traveling westward for an opportunity to succeed in your new land.
Create a journal entry that includes:
A biographical paragraph (give yourself a name, age, specific place of origin (where you came from), and economic status.
A narrative (2 or more paragraphs) where you describe your daily life or the work you do or what you do for entertainment, what your family is like, etc. Think of this as an oral history you intend to pass down through the generations. What do they need to know about the life you lived? Use whatever sources you need to make the entry authentic.
A reflective paragraph (or 2) where you present a specific message of peace and hope to future generations. What wisdom do you want to pass along to your children and grandchildren? What wisdom would you like to pass along to the future?
Things to remember:
Note that you will be creating a minimum of four well-developed paragraphs.
Research will be needed to give your narrative historical accuracy. Avoid low-quality websites.
A diary entry does not have to be overly formal. It should read as if you are leaving it behind for the world to learn from and your loved ones to cherish when you are gone.
Aim for multiple paragraphs that flow easily from one to the next.
Proofread before submitting.

Just as the immigrants who arrived before them, refugees of war and economic hardship arrived in America seeking a new life. Many of these refugees faced a culture shock that differed from those who arrived during the 18th and 19th centuries. In this assignment, you take on the role of a reporter covering the cultural changes these refugees had to deal with when they escaped war and economic hardship to arrive on American soil.
Select an immigrant group fleeing war or economic hardship and arriving in America. Imagine you are a reporter assigned to cover the group’s story. Describe the interviews you might perform and include those and any images to support the interviews in your report.
Choose from:
Koreans
Vietnamese
Hmong
Indians
Arabs from the Middle East or Northern Africa
Hondurans
Guatemalans
Salvadorans
Prepare for your interview:
Describe what you already know about the group’s experiences and culture
List five or six informed and specific questions about the cultural differences they experienced upon arrival
Prepare the report:
The report should have a minimum of 4 well-developed paragraphs and include at least 2 images
The first paragraph should describe the place of origin and the refugee’s culture before their arrival here.
The following 2 to 5 paragraphs should include the questions you asked and the answers you received during the interview.
The final paragraph should include a discussion of your impressions of the group’s refugee experience.
Things to remember:
Note that you will be creating a minimum of four well-developed paragraphs. These should consist of no less than 6 sentences.
You need to include two images that support your magazine or newspaper report.
Research is needed to give your interview historical accuracy. Avoid low-quality websites.
This assignment is not a formal essay and should read like an article you might see in a newspaper, magazine, or on the internet.
Aim for multiple paragraphs that flow easily from one to the next.
Proofread before submitting.
Statements based on historical facts need to be referenced. Your source material must be academically credible and validated using in-text citations and references in APA format.

In this unit, you were introduced to people who had to flee their home countries

In this unit, you were introduced to people who had to flee their home countries due to war or for economic reasons. For this discussion, you are asked to imagine the United States engaged in a second civil war. The Civil War of 2028 arose from economic disagreements, but the cause is unimportant to this discussion. Due to this all-encompassing war, there is no place in this country where you believe your family to be safe. You decide to pack up your household and emigrate to another country. Your responses to the following should be in narrative form, including 2 or 3 paragraphs.
Where would you go?
Name the country you would emigrate to
Describe in detail how and why you decided that would be the best place for your family.
How would you get there?
Describe the trip you would take, whether by car, airplane, or boat. Who would meet you when you arrive if not by the family car?
Depending on the form of transportation, what would you take with you? Why?
What would you have to do to assimilate to your new situation?
What language would you have to learn?
How might the new location affect the foods you eat?
Would you have to dress any differently because of the weather or the culture?
What cultural components would you miss most?
What would be the hardest part of your emigration? Choose one of the following and describe your feelings about it.
Leaving extended family and friends behind
Leaving your home and your possessions
Adapting to a new culture

Immigrants often arrived with only the clothes on their backs and a single suitc

Immigrants often arrived with only the clothes on their backs and a single suitcase full of their most treasured possessions.
The Suitcase.jpg
You are asked to write a brief narrative about an immigrant’s suitcase for this discussion.
In your first paragraph, using your imagination and what you have learned, describe the immigrant who is carrying the suitcase
What is their name?
Where are they from?
How was their journey?
where did they live on the ship
how long were they on the ship
Why are they coming to America?
In your second paragraph, again using your imagination and what you have learned, describe in detail the content of the suitcase your immigrant is carrying (not including any clothing)
Describe 2 cultural treasures packed into the suitcase (do not worry about the size of the treasure compared to the size of the suitcase)
Why would the immigrant choose those 2 treasures?

In this assignment, you will create a poster using power point – you will submit

In this assignment, you will create a poster using power point – you will submit a digital file, NOT a hard copy of your poster.
A poster is simply a summary of findings related to a topic or research project.
Here are the steps to creating your poster:
Find academic sources related to your topic, then select at least 2 academic articles/sources (outside of the unit materials) to include in your poster (no encyclopedia sources are allowed). References to popular media/articles/stories can be used to add “color” and/or provide applied examples (such references are in ADDITION to your 2 academic sources). Using APA 7 style, you will cite your sources in-text and list them in a references section.
Synthesize the material from your articles into a poster that presents a summary of your selected topic. It is up to you to decide how you want to present your findings and organize the poster; however, I do not want you to simply write a summary paragraph for each article (this is not synthesizing). Each paragraph in your poster should include references to multiple articles. You can learn more about synthesizing information under Poster Resources below.

Create your poster. See below for instructions on creating a poster in power point and poster templates. Make sure your poster is “poster” sized (NOT the size of a typical power point slide).
ADDITIONAL NOTES/REQUIREMENTS:
The poster templates provided in the Poster Resources down below are for research posters, so your headings will vary according to your topic and how you choose to organize your poster.
All information that you present on your poster must be cited using APA 7 style, and references must be placed at the lower right hand corner of your poster.
DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! You must use your own words when you write your information. Also, you are not allowed to use direct quotations on your poster, unless the quotation is especially well-written and colorful. In short, you will write your interpretation of what an author has said, and then you will cite that author using a superscriipt number in-text (for example, Boys and girls learn a lot1). At the bottom of the poster you will then show the reference for Smith (for example, 1. Smith, A. J. (2005). Boys and girls together. Journal of Gender, 6, 119-220.)

This document includes tips on font size (MINIMUM of 24 point font for main text, but I would probably go bigger – section headings should probably be bigger than main body text; minimum of 72 point font for main poster title), design features, etc. 🙂

How to Synthesize Information:

Rather than creating a poster with article summaries on it, I would like you to create a poster that presents sub-topics within your chosen poster topic. This means, each section of your poster will likely draw from multiple sources of information to create a summary of research/findings/beliefs related to that particular theme/sub-topic. Think of your poster like a very very very very brief research paper 🙂 This document helps to explain the concept of synthesizing information and provides one method you might consider using to organize your research/sources. Although your poster is not as in depth as a full literature review, the general concepts can still be helpful.
APA 7 Citations and References Help:

You are required to cite where your information comes from in the text of your poster and include a list of references on your poster. This document provides guidance in using APA 7 style to cite information and list references.

Select ONE DAY of a non-US-based newspaper (or other news source) that has a national or
international readership. SKIM all sections of the entire paper for one day and carefully READ
and EXAMINE a sample of articles. Draw on your reading of the selected newspaper (see
“Newspaper Sources” below) and use specific course concepts and information to analyze HOW
and IN WHAT WAYS we know this is a globalized world.
Specifically, write an essay that considers the following questions:
1. Do the newspaper’s various sections and articles form a coherent view of the world?
For example, can you tell if the newspaper is presenting a particular national, regional,
ethnic, or other view? How can you tell? What aspects (cultural, political, economic,
environmental) or theories or perspectives (e.g., neoliberalism, dependency, -scapes,
racial capitalism, etc.) are evident in the articles you read or the photos or other
features of the news source?
2. Or, alternatively, do you see any contradictions between the various articles and/or
sections of the newspaper. Do you find anything contradictory, or perhaps confused?
3. How might the articles be revised to provide a more global perspective to its readers?
In other words, do you find some aspects of globalization (historical, cultural, political,
economic) missing?
4. In what ways does the one day of one newspaper you chose constitute a kind of
historical artifact of our times, an artifact that future readers might use when studying
representations of globalization in the year 2023?
Be sure to consider cultural, economic, and political dimensions of globalization as you write a
strong, clear and well-organized essay.
Newspaper sources
The first step will be for you to choose a non-US-based newspaper! Choose a national or
international newspaper. For example, the Knoxville News Sentinel is not appropriate for this
assignment. Neither are newswire services like AP or UPI. If you are uncertain about whether a
particular newspaper qualifies, please ask!.
Students with intermediate (or higher) knowledge of a language other than English are highly
encouraged to choose a news source in that language to use their language skills for this
assignment!
