For this paper you are being asked to write about a flawed Criminal Justice Policy. To do so, the paper should comprise 3 sections:
Section 1: A history of the policy and what the policy was intended to do and what impacts it intended to have. This should include a discussion of the problem the policy was intended to address, as well as (where applicable) relevant laws or statutes and court decisions related to the policy.
Section 2: A discussion, based in empirical research, regarding why the policy is flawed (i.e. doesn’t produce its intended effects, or may even create unintended ones). This should draw on relevant academic research on the policy and synthesize that research literature in a clear way.
Section 3: Suggestions for improving the policy (if any) or an argument to remove/abolish the policy. These suggestions can certainly come from experts and from the research literature (you don’t have to come up with them on your own)
Expectations
– The paper should be approximately 10-12 pages, although this is just a ballpark and longer or shorter papers are acceptable.

Paper goals (What you need to do)
There are three things you need to do in mini-paper 1 (the first just concerns APA formatting). There is no specific organization required for your paper—you just want to make sure you’re accomplishing the below goals. Use paragraphs wisely to guide your reader and don’t forget that your writing should seek to meet relevant intellectual standards outlined in the Critical Thinking Primer. Here is what you need to do:
1) Use APA to (a) format your document and (b) cite and reference all information that did not come from your own thoughts and is not reasonably assumed to be common knowledge (see overall assignment 1 instructions, APA template, and citation guide above).
2) Clearly and correctly describe the topic you selected. Describe the concept in your own words with correct APA citation for your sources (e.g., textbook; videos; outside sources). To support your writing, you must use at least one written course resource (i.e., a course reading) or at least one source that’s linked/cited in one of your course readings (you do not need to get a source from beyond the course materials; however, if you decide to, it’s your job to make good decisions about source selection).
Look at how other writers have described this or similar concepts—do you think they did a good job? How can you do better? Try, for example, using a clear definition or descriiption, any relevant expansion beyond a basic definition, and an example to illustrate the concept for your reader. Make sure you’re keeping in mind the intellectual standards from week 1 to support good writing (e.g., writing should be clear, accurate, complete, fair, etc.)
3) Make effective use of your chosen topic. Here is where you’re showing that you understand the relevance of your topic to critical thinking. Generally, I’d like you to describe one way that you can use this concept to make your thinking better. The following are examples of things you might choose to do. Do not try to integrate all of these suggestions—stay focused narrowly on one of these or, alternatively, come up with your own approach to using your selected concept:
Possible approach 1. Describe some specific way you can use this concept to better understand something from your past: some aspect of your personal life, digital media you consumed, or your understanding of world events.
Possible approach 2. Explain how you might usefully integrate the concept in your future thinking as you navigate social relationships in the online world.
Possible approach 3. Describe how your learning about the concept gives you new insights about some specific idea or information you’ve encountered online (such as a podcast episode, tweets, articles, etc).
Possible approach 4. Synthesize this concept with another critical thinking concept already discussed in the course (e.g., one of the 8 critical thinking standards). Explain how your selected concept relates to another critical thinking tool you’ve discovered in this course or have encountered outside the course.
*Tip: There are lots of ways you can apply these concepts we’re learning about, but you need to try extra hard with your thinking on how you might use the concept. Conclusory statements must be supported with research or analysis. I also suggest that you explain the arguments that proponents of the majority’s position or status quo use to support their position and then explain why it is wrong and your position is right. (Did they miss something? Misinterpret something? Overlook critical results or statistics?)
7. Conclusion: Pull your points together to draw a conclusion for your reader.

Formatting: Double-space your paper and use 12 point Times New Roman. you may use APA format (which DOES require a title page and bibliography/reference page).
Topic: Choose a topic that interests you–but it must deal with a topic that we cover in this class. If you don’t feel passionate about the subject matter, choose another topic. If you are having a hard time finding a topic, look through the lessons for ideas.
