Struggling with where to start your discussion participation? Follow this guide to structure and write your posts easily!

Step 1: Understand the Requirements

  • You need to respond to 2 discussion questions with original contributions and include 2 peer-reviewed journal articles (within the last 10 years) to support your answers (in addition to the textbook).
  • Your response should be 2-3 paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each to fully develop your thoughts and provide insight.
  • You also need to respond to 1 classmate’s post with a 1-2 paragraph response (5-7 sentences), citing at least 1 peer-reviewed journal article.

Step 2: Choose Your Discussion Questions

  • Review the discussion questions carefully and select the two that you feel most comfortable with or have the most insight into.
  • Be sure to carefully read through the materials for the week (textbook, articles, and viewings) to prepare your responses.

Step 3: Research Literature to Support Your Responses

  • For each discussion question, research and choose 2 peer-reviewed journal articles that are within 10 years and relevant to the topic.
  • Ensure these sources are credible and directly support your points in each response. These will provide evidence-based backing for your opinions.
  • Example: If discussing behavior analysis in schools, find recent journal articles on behavior intervention strategies or educational psychology.

Step 4: Write Your Responses (2-3 Paragraphs Each)

  • Structure Each Response:
    • Introduction: Begin with a concise, direct response to the question.
    • Development of Thought: Offer a thorough explanation of your reasoning, backed by the research you’ve found.
    • Insight: Provide your own insights, experiences, or perspectives on the topic.
    • Support: Include citations from the textbook and 2 peer-reviewed journals to back up your argument.

    Example (Response to Question 1):
“In recent years, the integration of behavior analysis in educational settings has grown significantly, primarily due to the increasing recognition of its effectiveness in improving student outcomes (Author1, 2022; Author2, 2021). However, while its effectiveness is widely supported, challenges in implementation, such as teacher training and resource availability, continue to hinder widespread adoption (Author3, 2020). Despite these challenges, studies show that with adequate support, behavior analytic interventions can significantly reduce disruptive behavior and enhance academic achievement in students with autism (Author4, 2023).”

Step 5: Respond to Your Classmates’ Posts

  • After reading your classmates’ responses, choose one post to reply to.
  • Your reply should be 1-2 paragraphs (5-7 sentences).
    • Acknowledge their point of view: Start by agreeing or offering a polite counterpoint.
    • Provide a thoughtful, additional perspective: Offer your own insight or ask a follow-up question to deepen the discussion.
    • Support your points with 1 peer-reviewed article.

Step 6: APA Formatting and Citations

  • APA Style for Citations: Ensure that you properly cite your sources in APA format. In-text citations should match the references at the end of the post.
    • In-text citation example: (Author1, 2022; Author2, 2021).
    • Reference list example:
      Author1, A. A. (2022). Title of the article. Journal Name, 34(2), 123-130.
      Author2, B. B. (2021). Title of the article. Journal Name, 45(4), 210-220.

Step 7: Review for Errors

  • Proofread Your Posts: Ensure there are no grammatical, spelling, or APA format errors before submitting.
  • Use a Spell Checker: Double-check for spelling and grammatical issues.

Step 8: Post on Time

  • Post by Day 3 (11:59 PM EST): Ensure that your responses are posted on time and that you engage with at least one classmate’s post.

Step 9: Submit Your Posts

  • Once you’ve completed your responses and replies, submit them according to the instructions, ensuring that all citations and formatting are correct.

By following this guide, you’ll have well-organized and thoughtful posts that meet the rubric requirements and engage with your peers in meaningful discussions.
