Competency
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competency:
Apply cross-cultural communication strategies for global audiences in real-world contexts
Scenario
You work for CON-voke, an organization that helps develop and run conventions and conferences on a variety of topics. Your coworker, Nathan, has developed a presentation about time management that will be delivered at the annual CON-voke company meeting. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he will not be able to attend and present. Using his script and materials, you must make this presentation to a multicultural audience.
Directions
The presentation will be brief, approximately 10 minutes. Nathan has already created a proposed outline, found some resources on time management, and written a partial script. However, you can see that his script is not the best for a multicultural audience. You will need to go through the presentation and make it ready.
Part 1: Annotated Presentation Script and Email: Review the outline, resources, and script. Use the outline and resources as a starting point, but you may make changes and additions as necessary. Your final presentation should describe the relevant topic and provide a good overview for an unfamiliar audience.
Once you have reviewed the resources, identify at least five passages in the script that will need to be modified to be more accessible to a global audience. You can use the ‘Comment’ feature in Microsoft Word, highlight the text, or use a different font color to identify these sections within the Partial Presentation Script. You need to finish writing the script and make any necessary changes to the language and content. Then, include an email to Nathan that explains why you made the changes.
The script should be approximately 1,000–1,500 words. As you complete the script, make sure the presentation is written for a multicultural audience. Take into consideration ways to structure the presentation to be effective for a variety of cultures and audiences.
Use structure, language, and examples that are culturally aware. Use neutral language, and avoid metaphors and examples that may not have broad relevance across cultures.Make sure you consider ways that language choices may impact the perception of the content.
After you have written the script, write an email to Nathan explaining the changes you made to tailor the script to a multicultural audience and why they address challenges in presenting to a global audience. Consider answering these questions:What language choices make communicating to a multicultural audience difficult?
What are some of the potential topics you should avoid when presenting to a global audience?
How do you determine how best to approach a multicultural audience?
What are some audience reactions you should consider as you write the script?
Diverse audiences have different expectations of presentations.Part 2: Recorded Video Presentation: Record your video presentation for the annual meeting. Your video should capture you presenting your revised script and be approximately ten minutes in length. You may use supporting materials, like visuals, to help improve your presentation. Be sure to consider how a global audience would interpret any images, if you choose to use them.
Use communication techniques to address a multicultural audience. Determine the best methods to convey your message to a global audience. Consider the following:Whether your presentation should be written to persuade or ask
The types of communication strategies, like storytelling or presenting scientific data, you should use or avoid
Make sure your tone, body language, and other nonverbal communications take different cultural outlooks into consideration. Make sure to utilize culturally aware tone, language, and delivery.
What to Submit
Every project has a deliverable or deliverables, which are the files that must be submitted before your project can be assessed. For this project, you must submit the following:
Annotated Presentation Script and Email
After reviewing the resources and the partial presentation script provided, identify passages of the script that are inappropriate for a multicultural audience by noting them within the document. Then, using Nathan’s outline, update the Presentation Script as needed to ensure it is complete and is appropriate for a multicultural audience. Submit your updated script, along with an email to Nathan that explains the changes you made within the script to address the multicultural audience. Your completed script should be 1,000–1,500 words.
Recorded Presentation
