1. Differentiate between electronic health record (EHR), electronic medical record (EMR), and personal health record (PHR)
2. Differentiate between clinical information systems (CIS) and administrative information systems (AIS)
3. What systems are currently being utilized at your organization?
My partial answer to assist you in assisting me…….. I work for an ambulance service in the prehospital environment. Several systems are used including CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch)***ProQA our service uses***, ePCR (Electronic Patient Care Reports)*** TraumaSoft our service uses***, TeliMedicine Systems ***Zoll Xseries***-used to upload vitals or transmit 12-lead ECGs to the hospital for STEMIs
If you had to rate the information-technology status of your organization, what score would you give them?
Identify two strength and two weaknesses of the current information-technology being used.
My partial answer to assist you in assisting me…… On a relative comparison, I would rate our agency as an 8 out of 10 within Michigan and a 7 out of 10 on a national scale. Within Michigan, our company is a highly competitive EMS provider, continuously growing and expanding in its technical capabilities. Our strengths, such as a robust ePCR system, efficient CAD integration, and a strong commitment to data management, position us ahead of many other EMS agencies in the state. These systems enable us to deliver quality patient care and maintain accurate and timely records, which is a significant advantage over others in Michigan.
On a national level, while our agency remains competitive, it would rank slightly lower at a 7 out of 10 compared to larger agencies, particularly those associated with teaching hospitals or those with superior funding. Hospital-affiliated EMS agencies often have more seamless data transmission capabilities, as their technologies are highly interoperable with existing hospital systems. Additionally, agencies in larger, more urban settings benefit from better funding and advanced connectivity options, allowing them to pioneer and adopt cutting-edge technologies more rapidly. This improved infrastructure enables them to integrate more sophisticated telemedicine solutions, real-time data transmission, and other emerging EMS technologies that our agency could aim to incorporate in the future to remain on par with the best in the nation.
