DISCUSSION CHAP 7: ASSESSING FOR STRENGTHS & WHAT NEEDS, NEED FILLING TO BECOME STRENGTHS

I think we all agree that the DISCUSSIONS have been very interesting & highly informative. You can be PROUD of yourselves.
Important to spend time going through the Modules carefully before arriving at the DISCUSSION, instead, possibly of the urge/impulse to jump to the DISCUSSION only.
Each Module/Chapter, has important info re working with people, concepts for SWs/Counselors, Medical and Law Enforcement Professionals etc.

Also, hope you watched the video in segment/page 10 (in this module) regarding the Child Welfare Educational Program (CWEP). It explains the partnering of ASU School of Social work & the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS). It’s an excellent opportunity to have your education at ASU paid for by the State of Arizona in return for you working for DCS for each year you accept tuition funding (for your junior and/or senior years). CHAP 7 DISCUSSION:
This week, you are going to be a DCS Social Worker, working with a young boy who has been removed from his mother and placed into a foster home. Your job is finding the strengths & finding the needs to be filled— (as opposed to seeing things from a “problem” perspective) To give you a good grounding, this has all been discussed in this Chapter 7 and the prior Chap 6.
Chapter 7 & the prior Chapter 6 have given attention to the Strength Based Approach.

Meet Robert:
12 years old
Withdrawn
Will not do chores
With a white foster family
Misses Mom
Has a 3 year old baby sister
Fights at school
Two weeks ago Robert was taken from his home & neighborhood when his mother was arrested & jailed for writing bad checks. He was placed in a white foster home. His 3 year old sister is with an aunt. Besides the clothes he wore, he brought only an old guitar. He has little contact with his father who lives in another state.
Robert has been very quiet and shy for the past two weeks. Most of the time he stays in his room. He answers questions with one-word answers. He refuses to look anyone in the eye. He won’t help around the house, even when asked. Robert is very capable of caring for his personal needs. At his new school, he got into a fight when someone asked him about his mother.
Regarding Robert: You are his case manager/social worker/counselor.
