Week 15: Discussion – First Draft and Peer Reviews of the Persuasive Research Paper
No unread replies.11 reply.
This week there will be two components to this discussion.
First, you’ll complete a FULL DRAFT (10 pages) of your Persuasive Research Paper Download Persuasive Research Paper. Your paper should be at least 10 pages (counting your Title and References pages). Save this draft as a .doc or .docx file and attach it to your week’s first post. This is due as your initial post before the end of this Wednesday, MST.
Second, you’ll post peer review letters to 2 different learners, just like the peer reviews we practiced last week. Post your letters directly on the discussion board, not as attachments.
You must return your peers’ feedback by the end of Sunday, MST, of this academic week for credit.
Your 2 peer reviews should focus on formative, rubric-based feedback.
Begin by once again reading through the rubric for the Persuasive Research Paper, located below.
Provide feedback to any 2 peers who have posted their drafts here.
Please provide feedback to peers whose drafts have not yet been reviewed by other learners.
If every draft on the discussion board has already been reviewed, you may review a draft that has already been reviewed.
Each review should be in the form of a letter written directly to the writer, addressing each of the rubric’s areas in a separate paragraph (APA, Mechanics, Structure and Organization, Introduction and Conclusion, Body, & Formatting).
Here are some guidelines and tips:
Mix criticism and praise.
Use the “describe, evaluate, suggest” framework detailed in this week’s OWL: Giving Feedback for Peer ReviewLinks to an external site. reading.
Whenever possible, provide examples by citing specific areas of your peer’s paper, i.e. “page 2, paragraph 3.”
Here’s an example of what one paragraph of your peer review could look like:
“In terms of structure and organization, I noticed that your paper is still a couple pages short of the required length. I wondered if adding more detail to your rebuttal section would help you generate a little more material. That section felt shorter than some of the others. I also noticed that the transition from the first and second full paragraphs on page 3 seemed abrupt. I didn’t quite see how those two topics connected to one another, and I thought it might be helpful to add more transition material there to make the connection.”
Each peer review should be 300-500 words in length and provide substantive, useful feedback to the writer.
