Student Replies That Needs to Be Responded to:
CLASSMATE POST 1
My realization after completing the study hours worksheet was that I might not be giving myself enough time to grasp the material. In my attempt to cram as much information as possible into my head at the last minute, I haven’t been able to retain and understand the concepts very well as a result.
There is no doubt that my learning style has changed significantly since I started nursing school. In the past, I was able to read and memorize information very easily, but nursing school has forced me to comprehend information at a deeper level than I previously could. The use of flashcards, teaching the material to someone else, and practicing critical thinking questions has enabled me to focus more on active learning techniques than I had in the past.
With the use of mind maps and diagrams, I have been able to experiment with the visual and auditory learning styles by using mind maps and diagrams. It has been my experience, however, that the kinesthetic style of learning works best for me at the moment. By collaborating with my classmates in study groups, participating in hands-on activities, and practicing skills in simulation labs, I am able to learn the most effectively because it is through collaborative work with my classmates. As a result, I am able to make sense of the material and apply it to a realistic situation in a way that makes sense to me, in terms of applying it to a real-life situation.
It’s obvious that once I adapted my study habits to align with my kinesthetic learning style, I have made great strides in improving my understanding of the nursing school material as a whole. In order for my nursing career to succeed, I have developed critical thinking skills as a result of connecting theory and practice.

CLASSMATE POST 2
After completing the worksheet, I don’t think I give myself enough time to study or learn the material that is given. Often, I take my notes in class during a powerpoint and lecture and although they are legible and organized I find that I don’t go back through them as I should. I feel giving yourself enough time to study and prepare for the exams are crucial to your success. Before nursing school I would study the night before an exam and hope to remember all the information that I jammed in my brain at one time.
Since I have started nursing school I find myself studying more and giving myself more than one night to study and remember all of the material. I find myself prioritizing my school work and trying to get it done before the due dates so I am not procrastinating and struggling at the last second to get things done.
Another thing I noticed that I changed since I started nursing school is my second guessing on my answers. I used to click the answer I thought was the best, and then go back and talk myself out of it, clicking another answer instead. Once I go back over the test results I realize I had the right answer the first time around and shouldn’t have changed that answer. Now, I try to keep the answer and not second guess myself and move onto the next question. I have found that I have been getting better grades and gaining confidence in my test taking as well.
My learning style is kinesthetic and more hands on works best for me. But I also find reading out loud helpful or talking myself through things. When I do this I feel like i retain it more. “Studies have found that you’re more likely to remember what you’ve read when you read out loud. It helps get the information into your long-term memory,” (Morris, BSN, MSN, 2022). Dedicated time, and space that has the least amount of distractions is also extremely helpful for staying focused and may make it easier to read allowed.
I hope to continue on good study habits, and take on new techniques to help contribute to my success in nursing school and my nursing career!

Original Discussion Prompt:
After doing the study hours worksheet, do you think you are giving yourself enough time to study to actually learn the material?
Describe how your learning style or study habits have changed since starting nursing school.
Example of How to Respond to a Student Discussion Post
Hi Nita,
I like how you discuss both the teacher observing the student and the student observing their own art. You bring up excellent points about the teachers observing the children, because it does help the teacher to better communicate with the children and understand them better. As teachers, it is very important to nurture students, particularly if they are very young, I think, because it allows them to better understand the needs of the student, and how to work with them. Paying attention to what the student is drawing, and seeing how the student reacts to their own work can improve the teachers’ understanding.
Expressing feelings in this discussion board reply examples is a major component of growing up. The more a student is able to express those feelings, the more they can understand them. I liked reading about what you said on this topic, and I agree that the art is a very useful tool that students can learn to express their feelings effectively. If they do not express them, they are keeping them inside, and drawing can become a form of counseling for them. In my opinion, I think the drawing can be particularly useful for many students who are quiet. These students do not often express themselves verbally, and drawing can be a way for them to understand their feelings, and to release some pent up sadness of hostile feelings, for example. I think this form of therapy sticks with many people throughout life, and they continue to use drawing as a coping mechanism.
Thanks,
Steven
